Summary

As a Senior Environment Artist at Lighthouse Games, you'll be responsible for crafting visually stunning and artistically compelling game worlds. Your focus will be on scene composition and world-building, working closely with the Art Director and Level Designers to create impactful scenes that immerse players. You'll design and curate large-scale environments and architectural structures, creating high-quality 3D models and textures. Optimization and integration of assets within the game engine (Unreal Engine or Unity) are crucial. Mentoring junior artists and maintaining a high standard of quality are also key aspects of this role. Experience shipping at least one major game title as a Senior Environment Artist is required.
Must have:
  • Shipped at least one major game title as a Senior Environment Artist
  • Advanced 3D modeling & texturing (Maya, 3DSMax, Blender, Substance Painter)
  • Unreal Engine or Unity expertise, focusing on scene composition & optimization
  • Strong understanding of shape, form, color theory, and composition
  • Excellent communication & mentorship skills
  • World-building and scene composition expertise
  • Collaboration with Level Design and Art Direction teams

Description

As a Senior Environment Artist, working closely with the Art Director and other key stakeholders, you will be responsible for creating visually stunning and artistically compelling game worlds that elevate player experience through meticulous scene composition and world-building. You will collaborate closely with Level Designers to shape both the large-scale layout and the moment-to-moment experience, curating impactful scenes that guide and immerse players.

With a focus on man-made structures. architecture, and scene planning, you will create believable environments that seamlessly blend aesthetics and gameplay needs. You will help define the visual identity of each space, using composition, lighting, and structural design to create a cohesive and memorable experience that supports the project’s overall art direction.

Key Duties Include

  • World Building & Scene Composition: Design and curate large-scale environments and architectural structures that support the game’s visual goals, create visual impact, and guide player movement through careful scene composition and layout
  • Collaborate with Level Design & Art Direction Teams: Partner with Level Designers to ensure each environment supports gameplay objectives, while working closely with the Art Director to maintain a cohesive and consistent visual style that enhances the player journey
  • Create and Implement High-Quality Environment Assets: Develop detailed 3D models and textures for man-made structures, props, and set pieces that define the look and feel of man-made environments and natural locations, in alignment with the game’s artistic vision
  • Optimize and Integrate Assets: Ensure environment assets are optimized for performance and seamlessly integrated into the game world, adhering to technical guidelines and gameplay requirements
  • Mentor and Guide the Environment Art Team: Provide leadership and mentorship to junior and mid-level artists, maintaining a high standard of quality and fostering a collaborative and creative team culture that aligns with the Art Director’s vision

Requirements

  • Shipped Games: Proven experience shipping at least one major game title as a Senior Environment Artist
  • Technical Proficiency: Advanced knowledge of 3D modeling and texturing software (e.g., Maya, 3DSMax, Blender, Substance Painter) and strong expertise in architectural and hard-surface modeling
  • Game Engine Expertise: Extensive experience with Unreal Engine or Unity, with a focus on scene composition, asset integration, and performance optimization
  • Artistic and Design Fundamentals: Strong understanding of shape, form, color theory, and composition principles, with a focus on creating visually compelling spaces that support gameplay and maintain the artistic vision
  • Collaboration and Leadership: Excellent communication skills and experience mentoring junior artists, with a proactive attitude towards cross-disciplinary collaboration and an ability to align environment art with the broader art direction goals

Desirable

  • Experience with World or Large-Scale Games: Strong background in building complex game environments that support visual consistency and player navigation
  • Architectural Background: Understanding of architectural styles with an ability to design spaces that feel believable and artistically cohesive
  • Strong Portfolio: A portfolio showcasing a diverse range of man-made environments or gameplay locations, demonstrating expertise in composition and visual design
