The Part-Time Engineering Technician will support mechatronics and optics projects, gaining hands-on experience while studying. Responsibilities include contributing to engineering initiatives, maintaining autonomy, and supporting interdisciplinary work. This temporary position, with a flexible schedule of 10-20 hours per week, requires a strong engineering foundation and a passion for building and experimenting.
Must have:
  • Pursuing or recently completed a Bachelor's degree in Engineering.
  • Basic knowledge of lasers and optics (preferred).
  • Strong problem-solving skills and independent learning ability.
Good to have:
  • Proficiency in SolidWorks for design and layout is a plus.
  • Familiarity with electrical design and microcontrollers is desirable.

Job Details

We are seeking a self-motivated and independent part-time Engineering Technician to support a variety of mechatronics and optics projects. It's an ideal opportunity for a current engineering student looking to gain hands-on experience while continuing their studies. In this role, you will take ownership of project tasks assigned by engineering managers and execute them with minimal supervision, contributing to real-world projects across multiple engineering disciplines.

Duration/Hours: This temporary position and is expected to last approximately one year, with a flexible onsite schedule of 10–20 hours per week. 

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

  • Contribute to both ongoing and new engineering initiatives with project scope dependent on expertise.  Opportunity in mechanical design/layout, electrical design, software integration, and opto-mechanical hardware
  • Collaborate with team members when needed but maintain a high level of autonomy and personal accountability.
  • Support the interdisciplinary nature of our work, exploring the integration of mechanical, electrical, and optical systems.

Education & Experience

  • Currently pursuing or recently completed a Bachelor's degree in Engineering; graduate students are also welcome to apply.
  • Basic knowledge of laser and optics preferred
  • Proficiency in SolidWorks for assembly and layout design is a plus.
  • Familiarity with electrical design and hands-on experience with microcontrollers (Arduino, Raspberry Pi, etc.) is desirable.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to learn and adapt independently.
  • Passion for building, experimenting, and engineering innovation ("engineering tinkerer" mindset).

Physical Requirements

  • Physical requirements are generally associated with work in a lab environment.  Some light lifting, and working at lab tables.
