As a Principal DevOps Engineer at IGN, you will be a key architect and leader in driving the strategy, design, and implementation of our infrastructure and DevOps practices. You will work at the highest level to ensure the scalability, reliability, and security of our systems, enabling seamless deployment and continuous integration for our web and mobile platforms. This role involves collaborating with engineering, product, QA, and operations teams to advance our infrastructure, enhance system reliability, and mentor other engineers. You will be responsible for architecting and implementing highly scalable, reliable, and secure cloud-based infrastructure across multiple environments, ensuring that infrastructure is designed for high availability and future growth. You will also design, optimize, and maintain complex CI/CD pipelines for automated build, testing, and deployment processes across development, staging, and production environments.
Must have:
  • 8+ years of experience in DevOps
  • Deep expertise in cloud services such as AWS
  • Demonstrated ability to design, implement, and maintain complex CI/CD pipelines
  • Expert-level experience with infrastructure-as-code tools such as Terraform
  • Strong scripting and automation skills with Python, Bash
  • Advanced knowledge of containerization technologies like Docker
  • Exceptional troubleshooting skills
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Skilled in creating clear, comprehensive, and easily searchable documentation
Good to have:
  • Experience in the media or entertainment industry
  • Familiarity with Agile and DevOps methodologies

Job Duties: (Bullet points on their day to day/what will be expected of them):
  • Architect and implement highly scalable, reliable, and secure cloud-based infrastructure across multiple environments. Ensure that infrastructure is designed for high availability and future growth.
  • Design, optimize, and maintain complex CI/CD pipelines for automated build, testing, and deployment processes across development, staging, and production environments. Drive the adoption of automation best practices to ensure rapid, high-quality releases.
  • Lead the management and optimization of cloud infrastructure on platforms such as AWS, Google Cloud, or Azure, focusing on performance, cost efficiency, and scalability.
  • Establish robust monitoring and alerting frameworks to ensure real-time insights into system performance. Lead incident management and post-incident analysis efforts, driving continuous improvement in system reliability and response time.
  • Work closely with cross-functional teams to streamline code deployments, improve deployment frequency, and ensure alignment with business and operational goals.
  • Oversee the implementation of security best practices in deployment, infrastructure management, and data protection, ensuring compliance with industry standards and company policies.
  • Champion automation across all aspects of DevOps, from infrastructure provisioning to operational workflows, reducing manual intervention and improving operational efficiency.
  • Provide technical leadership, coaching, and mentorship to junior and senior DevOps engineers, fostering a culture of growth, collaboration, and continuous learning within the team.
Job Qualifications:
The Must-Haves
  • 8+ years of experience in DevOps, Site Reliability Engineering, or a similar role, with 3+ years in a senior or principal capacity.
  • Deep expertise in cloud services such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud, including hands-on experience in optimizing cloud infrastructure.
  • Demonstrated ability to design, implement, and maintain complex CI/CD pipelines using tools like Jenkins, GitLab CI, or CircleCI.
  • Expert-level experience with infrastructure-as-code tools such as Terraform, Ansible, or CloudFormation.
  • Strong scripting and automation skills with Python, Bash, or equivalent languages, aimed at automating repetitive tasks and improving operational efficiency.
  • Advanced knowledge of containerization technologies like Docker and orchestration platforms such as Kubernetes in production environments.
  • Exceptional troubleshooting skills and a proactive mindset in leading efforts to resolve infrastructure issues, optimize performance, and guide incident response.
  • Excellent communication skills, with a proven ability to lead and collaborate with cross-functional teams in a fast-paced environment.
    • Skilled in creating clear, comprehensive, and easily searchable documentation that can be understood and expanded upon by other team members.
    • Proficient in writing detailed project specifications and breaking down projects into user stories and tasks so that team members can contribute effectively to the overall effort.
Not Required, but Helpful
  • Experience in the media or entertainment industry.
  • Familiarity with Agile and DevOps methodologies, driving their implementation within teams.
  • Certifications in cloud technologies (e.g., AWS Certified DevOps Engineer, Azure DevOps Engineer Expert, Certified Kubernetes Administrator).
Work Environment:
  • Work Schedule: Fulltime, M-F. There is an expectation for this role to work a shared on-call schedule with other team members, which requires availability outside regular working hours from time-to-time. 
  • Travel Requirements: No travel is required for this role. 
  • Physical Requirements: There are no physical requirements for this role. 
  • Work Model: For applicants who reside in or around Los Angeles, New York, or London, there may be a requirement to go into our offices 1-2 days per week. For others located in different areas around the world, this position will be remote.

Salary Disclosure: Ziff Davis provides a range for the base pay. Factors that may be used to determine your actual pay may include your specific job related knowledge, skills, experience, and geographic location. The base pay for this position ranges from $175,000 to $182,980, plus incentive compensation (for eligible roles only), 401K with company match, medical, dental, vision, and life insurance, short and long-term disability, and a flexible time off policy.
