Wabtec's KinetiX team is seeking an IT System Design Leader to spearhead the architecture, deployment, and evolution of wayside inspection systems, focusing on computer and network design for on-site data acquisition and consolidation. This role involves designing robust, scalable architectures for collecting, processing, and storing large volumes of data, balancing centralized and distributed computing resources, and identifying/addressing network design gaps. The specialist will conduct testing, validate designs, and collaborate with customer IT teams, operations, engineering, and vendors to ensure system alignment and integration. Responsibilities include maintaining network architecture documentation, designing high-performance redundant data networks for rail environments, specifying topologies, ensuring secure data transfer, and architecting edge compute solutions for data pre-processing. Experience with cloud platforms like AWS and Azure, cybersecurity principles, and industry protocols for wayside inspection systems is required.

  • Familiarity with wayside inspection protocols.

The KinetiX Inspection Technologies suite offers automated proactive monitoring solutions for rolling stock condition, ranging from component-level to full train inspection. 

 

Position Overview:We are seeking a highly skilled and visionary IT System Design Leader to spearhead the architecture, deployment, and ongoing evolution of wayside inspection systems with a primary focus on computer and network design for on-site data acquisition, management, and consolidation into a back-office data centerAs the IT System Design Leader, you will play a critical role in shaping how advanced inspection technologies collect, process, and deliver actionable insights—leveraging robust data network design and cutting-edge edge computing—while ensuring seamless integration across multiple subsystems. This position demands a strategic thinker with hands-on expertise in both the technical and operational challenges of on-premise deployment, as opposed to cloud-based (e.g., Wabtec KinetiX data center) solutions. 

 

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Lead the design and implementation of integrated IT systems for wayside inspection solutions. 

  • Develop robust, scalable architectures capable of collecting, processing, and storing large volumes of data from diverse inspection subsystems (e.g., vision as non-vision systems or other IoT devices). 

  • Balance centralized and distributed computing resources (edge vs. Backoffice), optimizing for latency, bandwidth, security, and reliability  

  • Identify and address network design or reliability gaps, proposing and implementing solutions to enhance performance and durability. 

  • Conduct thorough testing and validation of IT and network system designs to ensure compliance with industry standards and customer requirements. 

  • Work closely with customer IT teams, operations, engineering, and external vendors to ensure system alignment with business objectives and integration with legacy equipment 

  • Provide technical support and guidance to other team members and stakeholders. Champion the use of open standards, APIs, and interoperability best practices for scalable system evolution. 

  • Coordinate data ingestion, normalization, and management processes across all endpoints 

Data Network Design Capabilities: 

  • Develop and maintain solutions network architecture and design documentation. 

  • Design high-performance, redundant data networks suitable for harsh rail and wayside environments. 

  • Specify network topologies (wired, wireless, hybrid) to support multi-source data ingestion and integration. 

  • Ensure secure and efficient data transfer within customer premises, minimizing dependency on external/cloud connectivity. 

Edge Compute Strategy 

  • Architect and deploy edge compute solutions to pre-process, filter, and analyze data close to the source 

  • Define hardware and software requirements for edge devices, ensuring compatibility with various inspection technologies 

  • Develop policies for data retention, transformation, and flow from edge to customer-hosted servers—contrasted with KinetiX cloud data center workflows. 

Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Systems Engineering, Information Technology, or a related field. 

  • 10+ years of progressive experience in IT system architecture, network design, or systems integration, with at least 3 years in a leadership or lead architect role. 

  • Proven expertise in designing and deploying data networks, including experience in both fixed and mobile (wireless) environments. 

  • Strong hands-on experience with edge computing platforms, IoT architectures, and industrial data acquisition systems. 

  • Demonstrated ability to architect, implement, and support on-premise data collection and hosting solutions (e.g., local servers, NAS/SAN, virtualized environments). 

  • Deep understanding of cybersecurity principles, including data encryption, authentication, and compliance frameworks relevant to transportation and industrial sectors. 

  • Experience integrating heterogeneous systems and devices using open standards, APIs, and middleware platforms. 

  • Familiarity with industry protocols and standards for wayside inspection systems (e.g., railroad signaling, imaging, sensor fusion, asset management). 

  • Experience with cloud computing platforms such as AWS and Azure. 

  • Excellent communication, documentation, and project management skills. 

  • Strong critical and analytical thinking 

  • Experience working with third-party vendors and managing external resources 

  • Willingness to travel to customer sites and wayside locations as needed.

    $89,100.00-$126,900.00

    The actual salary offered to a candidate may be influenced by a variety of factors, such as: training, transferable skills, work experience, education, business needs, market demands and work location. The base pay range is subject to change and may be modified in the future. More information on offered benefits, which include health, welfare, and retirement, are available at mywabtecbenefits.com.
