Starbreeze seeks a Senior Lighting Artist for their Project Baxter, a cooperative urban crawl within a reactive Dungeons & Dragons world built in Unreal Engine 5. Responsibilities include creating and implementing in-game lighting to match art direction, collaborating with art and tech teams, using project management tools, staying updated on Unreal Engine 5 technology, and mentoring junior colleagues. The role requires extensive experience in AA+ console/PC game lighting, real-time PBR workflows, and creative problem-solving. The position is based in Stockholm with a hybrid work schedule (Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday in the office).

Job Details

We are looking to hire a Senior Lighting Artist to join our Project Baxter team. You will create and implement lighting for various locations and environments in the diverse world of Dungeons & Dragons® that elicits the desired atmosphere of the art direction.

As a Senior member of our studio, you will be expected to contribute at a more advanced level, whilst also guiding and mentoring less experienced colleagues. You will also collaborate with peers and other departments to achieve optimal outcomes and solutions, and bring art and lighting in particular’s perspective into cross-departmental discussions.

Project Baxter is a cooperative urban crawl through a reactive Dungeons & Dragons®-world, inspired by our love of tabletop RPGs and utilizing procedural tools to enhance emergent gameplay in an endlessly replayable setting. Project Baxter is currently in development in Unreal Engine 5 and is set to launch on all major platforms in 2026.

Please note that this role must be based in Stockholm with Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday as set office days.


Responsibilities:

  • Creating and implementing in-game lighting for various settings that elicits the desired atmosphere of the art direction;
  • Follow references, concepts, and art direction while also having the initiative to take the work further independently;
  • Working closely with the Art and Tech teams to ensure that quality is consistent and cohesive;
  • Updating work and backlog using project management and planning tools (e.g. JIRA);
  • Staying on top of the latest available technology and tools within Unreal Engine 5 to ensure we are creating the best possible visuals;
  • Guide, coach and mentor less experienced colleagues.


Requirements:

  • Extensive experience working as a Lighting Artist in the development of AA+ console/PC games;
  • Experience working in real-time PBR lighting workflows using a combination of baked and real-time lighting models;
  • Ability to find creative solutions to lighting problems at more complex levels;
  • Great understanding of performance and cost of lighting;
  • Strong artistic skill set, a good sense of light, colors, and materials;
  • Experience mentoring less experienced colleagues.


Nice to have:

  • Experience working with Unreal Engine 4 and/or 5;
  • An interest in, and a willingness to work on, a variety of different game genres and art styles.


Interview process:

  • 30-minute introductory video call with a member of our Talent Acquisition team;
  • 60-minute video interview with our Studio Art Director and Senior Environment Artist;
  • A short (4-hour max) test that focuses on your artistic eye and technical skills in lighting within Unreal Engine;
  • 60-minute video interview with our Art Producer and the project’s Producer.
