About the job:
Google's User Experience (UX) team is looking for a passionate and talented PhD student to join our team as a User Experience Research Intern for the summer of 2025. In this role, you will be responsible for designing and conducting independent research using a variety of qualitative and quantitative methods, working cross-functionally with designers, engineers, and product managers to ensure user-centric, data-driven decisions are made, and effectively communicating research findings and advocating for them outside of the project team. You will be responsible for collecting and analyzing user behavior through lab studies, field visits, ethnography, surveys, benchmark studies, server logs, and online experiments (A/B testing). This is a full-time internship, lasting 12 weeks, and is open to candidates currently attending a degree program in the US who are available to work full-time outside of university term time.
Must have:
  • PhD in Human Factors, Psychology, Human Computer Interaction, Cognitive Science, Computer Science, Information Science, or related field.
  • Internship, work, or project experience with research design utilizing various methods (e.g., usability studies, contextual inquiry, surveys, etc.).
Good to have:
  • Experience integrating user research into product designs and design practices.
  • Knowledge of statistics and experimental design.
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and collaboration skills.

Minimum qualifications:

  • Currently pursuing a PhD degree in Human Factors, Psychology, Human Computer Interaction, Cognitive Science, Computer Science, Information Science, or related field.
  • Internship, work, or project experience with research design utilizing various methods (e.g., usability studies, contextual inquiry, surveys, etc.).

Preferred qualifications:

  • Currently attending a degree program in the US and available to work full time for 12 weeks outside of university term time.
  • In their penultimate academic year or returning to a degree program after completion of the internship.
  • Experience integrating user research into product designs and design practices.
  • Knowledge of statistics and experimental design.
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and collaboration skills.

The US base salary range for this full-time position is $100,000-$128,000. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. The range displayed on each job posting reflects the minimum and maximum target salaries for the position across all US locations. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.
