Lightspeed LA seeks a Lead Tools Engineer to lead and develop key game and game-adjacent tools, build systems, and work with IT on developer setups. Responsibilities include creating performance metrics, evolving existing systems, mentoring engineers, and building a positive team culture. The ideal candidate has 7+ years of game programming experience, at least one shipped AAA title, and expertise in C++, C#, and Python. They will collaborate with various teams and manage direct reports, ensuring polished player experiences.

Welcome to Lightspeed LA, the first U.S.-based, AAA game development studio for Tencent Games. Lightspeed LA is focused on building open-world games that emphasize an ambitious living world, sophisticated player-driven gameplay, and mature, thoughtful storytelling. What the Role Entails

LightSpeed LA seeks a talented and enthusiastic Lead Tools Engineer to join our new studio in sunny Irvine California. The ideal candidate will have a strong passion for games and enable content creators to deliver the most polished experience for our players.
Join our team of industry veterans and help us build a team and culture of respect that pushes boundaries while having lots of fun.

General:

  • Work with and lead tools and dev-ops engineering team to develop key game and game adjacent tools and build systems.
  • Work with IT teams to ensure a quality setup for all developers and pipelines.
  • Create, monitor, and control metrics impacting product and team quality.
  • Work closely with teammates to design and build performant, reliable and fast iteration tools using proven practices.
  • Evolve iteratively existing systems into state-of-the-art solutions.

Leadership and Management:

  • Provide technical leadership across multiple tools and build systems and features
  • Mentor, develop, and learn from engineering colleagues
  • Be a leadership resource for engineers across the entire engine team
  • Help build and maintain an open and energetic team culture
  • Conduct regular one-on-one meetings with team members to provide guidance, feedback, and support their professional development
  • Participate in the recruitment and onboarding of new team members, ensuring a highly skilled team that aligns with project requirements
  • Facilitate team-building activities to promote a positive and collaborative working environment

Who We Look For

  • A passion and enthusiasm for playing and developing exceptional games.
  • Experience bringing multiple large-scale game titles to completion on PC and consoles
  • 7+ years of professional game programming experience
  • At least 1 shipped/published AAA title
  • Experience with game console hardware
  • Deep understanding of game and game adjacent tools
  • Experience managing direct reports
  • Experience performing in a senior or principal software engineering role or equivalent
  • Ability to collaborate with other engineers, designers, artists and other game developers
  • Ability to work well in a fluid, changing environment as creative challenges evolve
  • Expert with C++, C# and Python
  • Good 3D math skills
  • Enjoy working closely with creative and technical team members
  • Value lean, simple, efficient, well-tested code
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

Preferred:

  • Experience working either AAA proprietary engines or third-party engines like Unreal and Unity
  • Experience with Incredibuild/Fastbuild/UBA/SN-DBS
  • Experience with source control systems such as Perforce
  • Familiarity with AAA asset and code pipelines
  • Experience with DCC tools like Maya, Houdini, Blender, etc.

The base pay range for this position in the state(s) above is $110,160.0 to $230,040.0 per year. Actual pay is based on market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. A sign on payment, relocation package, and restricted stock units may be provided as part of the compensation package, as well as other medical, financial, and/or other benefits, dependent on the specific position offered.
