As a Senior Level Designer at Aesir Interactive in Munich, you will leverage your expertise in Unreal Engine 4/5 and solid industry experience to lead the creation of immersive gameplay spaces. You'll collaborate across departments to deliver memorable player experiences, owning features and mentoring junior designers. Aesir Interactive fosters a fun, focused, and casual atmosphere, developing games for PC, Xbox, Playstation, and Switch, with a strong belief in agile development and continuous skill advancement.
Must have:
  • Designing and blocking out open-world and architectural spaces.
  • Driving the level design vision from concept to final implementation.
  • Integrating level design with environment art for cohesion.
  • Collaborating with tech and art departments to refine spatial design.
  • Leading and supporting junior designers with guidance and feedback.
  • Sharing work with the team to communicate intentions and integrate feedback.
  • Contributing to a varied, ambitious, and inventive catalogue of games.
  • Conceptualizing levels (on paper or using any 2D software).
  • Greyboxing in Unreal Engine.
  • Building and iterating level designs with gameplay entities.
  • Implementing levels and missions that integrate gameplay objectives.
  • Creating and testing basic content setups.
  • Collaborating closely with creative, narrative, and technical teams.
  • Passionate about craft, experienced, and pushing boundaries.
  • Study games across genres, analyzing successes and challenges.
  • Collaborative, with strong grasp of development pipeline.
  • Communicate clearly, self-organized, diligent in tracking progress.
Good to have:
  • Demonstrable industry experience in a senior or lead capacity.
  • A strong portfolio showcasing well-documented level design work.
  • Advanced understanding of gameplay, mechanics, and system design.
  • Ability to contribute to world-building and environmental storytelling.
  • Narrative design capabilities: characters, dialogue, story arcs, and scene design.
  • Technical understanding of engine rendering (e.g., draw calls, texture memory).
  • Artistic sensibilities: lighting, color theory, and basic visual composition.
  • Level art experience or the ability to collaborate effectively with environment artists.
  • 3D modeling experience and willingness to learn new tools.

You’ll lead the creation of immersive gameplay spaces and collaborate across departments to deliver memorable player experiences. You are confident in owning features, mentoring others, and aligning creative vision with technical implementation.

  • Designing and blocking out a wide range of open-world and architectural spaces in varied environments, with an emphasis on gameplay and narrative flow.
  • Driving the level design vision from concept to final implementation.
  • Integrating your level design with environment art to express gameplay and aesthetics cohesively.
  • Collaborating with tech and art departments to refine spatial design, performance, and visual quality.
  • Leading by example and supporting junior designers with guidance and structured feedback.
  • Sharing your work with the team to communicate your intentions and integrate feedback.
  • Contributing within and outside of your responsibilities to a varied, ambitious, and inventive catalogue of games.

##### Who are we looking for:

  • You are passionate about your craft, experienced, and constantly looking to push the boundaries of gameplay and level design.
  • 2+ shipped titles for console/PC as a regular or Sr. Level Designer
  • You study games across genres, analyzing their successes and challenges.
  • You are collaborative, with a strong grasp of how your work fits into the wider game development pipeline.
  • You communicate clearly, are self-organized, and diligent in tracking and presenting your progress.
  • Your portfolio demonstrates your design thinking, execution quality, and professional approach to documentation and polish.

##### Main responsibilities

  • Conceptualizing levels (on paper or using any 2D software)
  • Greyboxing in Unreal Engine
  • Building and iterating level designs with gameplay entities, terrain, and environment elements.
  • Implementing levels and missions that integrate gameplay objectives with narrative.
  • Creating and testing basic content setups, ensuring alignment with overall game mechanics and goals.
  • Collaborating closely with creative, narrative, and technical teams throughout development.

##### Additional responsibilities:

  • Supporting the design team by contributing ideas and helping with game design when needed.
  • Assisting with game pitches, prototypes, and design presentations.
  • Playtesting your work and that of others to identify improvements.
  • Providing and receiving focused, constructive feedback to elevate the overall quality.

##### The ideal candidate also has one more of the following:

  • Demonstrable industry experience in a senior or lead capacity.
  • A strong portfolio showcasing well-documented level design work.
  • Advanced understanding of gameplay, mechanics, and system design.
  • Ability to contribute to world-building and environmental storytelling.
  • Narrative design capabilities: characters, dialogue, story arcs, and scene design.
  • Technical understanding of engine rendering (e.g., draw calls, texture memory).
  • Artistic sensibilities: lighting, color theory, and basic visual composition.
  • Level art experience or the ability to collaborate effectively with environment artists.

  • 5+ years of professional experience as a level designer in game development.
  • Expert knowledge of Unreal Engine 4/5, including greyboxing, scripting, and level performance tuning.
  • A portfolio showcasing playable levels, design documentation, and creative execution.
  • Strong understanding of narrative integration, player flow, and engagement.
  • Experience mentoring other designers or leading a small team.
