The Product Development Engineer I at Mattel supports and drives technical product innovation, developing creative concepts into manufacturable solutions. This role provides project support to senior engineers, acting as a focal point for technical solutions ensuring financial targets, schedule adherence, and safety/quality standards. Responsibilities include providing feedback on concept feasibility, developing mechanisms, creating breadboard models and BOMs, translating design visions into technical specs, defining product function, and performing standardized engineering tasks. The role also involves collaboration with cross-functional teams, including operations and new product development, and supporting corrective action programs.
Must have:
  • BA/BS in Engineering
  • Understanding of engineering principles
  • Knowledge of plastic production
  • CAD software (SolidWorks or Creo)
  • Statistical understanding
Good to have:
  • Experience in toys/consumer goods
  • Knowledge of various raw materials

Job Description

The Opportunity: 

This position is a focused, technical engineering role responsible for supporting and helping to drive technical product innovation and the development of creative new product concepts into manufacturable solutions. This position also provides project support to more senior engineers acting as mentors to help gain experience. This position serves as focal point for driving technical engineering solutions on new product concepts to ensure financial targets, schedule, and adherence to specified safety and quality standards. The position also drives Brand level value engineering and advanced product quality planning. The job role also serves as a technical engineering liaison with Operations and collaborates with the cross functional New Product Development Team to support efficient flow of new product concepts through the new product development lifecycles. This job also supports team level corrective action programs administered by CPI.

What Your Impact Will Be: 

  • Provides feedback to Design & PMs during initial concept stages to determine feasibility of planned toy.
  • Assists with the development of new mechanisms to achieve toy functionality goals.
  • Assists with the creation of breadboard models as and when needed.
  • Assists in the creation of engineering BOM.
  • Assists in translating design vision for toy into technical specs that can be passed on to development houses, tooling, plants.
  • Assists in the definition of product function through Functional Spec.
  • Performs standardized engineering tasks guided by instructions and guidelines.
  • Emphasis on learning to incorporate Mattel's processes, procedures and practices with knowledge acquired through formal education or professional experience.
  • Primarily works on products in established pathway.
  • Communicate and cooperate with cross-functional partners.

Qualifications

What We’re Looking For:

  • BA/BS degree in an Engineering discipline preferred 
  • 0-2 years of experience in the toys or consumer goods industry preferred
  • Fundamental understanding of common Engineering principles and practices
  • General knowledge of plastic production processes and assembly techniques for plastic products
  • Somewhat diversified procedures and specialized standards that guides thinking
  • Knowledge of various raw materials; textiles, plastics, etc., in addition to the Manufacturing Process
  • Knowledge and experience in CAD Software (like SolidWorks or Creo)
  • Understanding of Statistics and probabilities
  • Demonstrated a growth mindset by staying curious and continuously learning, embracing challenges, and improving themselves


The annual base salary range for this position is between $66,400 and $83,000.
**This range is indicative of projected hiring range, however annual base salary will be determined based on a candidate’s work location, skills and experience.
