The Project Engineer/Coordinator - EMEA will support and coordinate fast-track datacenter project execution within Microsoft's Cloud Operations and Innovation (CO&I) team. Responsibilities include coordinating communication between EPC projects, mitigating challenges, maintaining engagement with partners and functional teams, and supporting program/project goals. The role requires excellent communication, organization, and leadership skills, along with the ability to work in a fast-paced environment. Key responsibilities include project scoping, feasibility studies, coordinating design teams, implementation management, risk mitigation, and budget control. The position may be primarily remote but requires proximity to a regional hub.

Overview

Microsoft Cloud Operations and Innovation (CO&I) is the team behind the cloud.  Within CO&I, the Engineering Procurement and Construction (EPC) team is responsible for delivering core datacenter infrastructure for Microsoft’s cloud business. The MS portfolio consists of complex, multi-disciplinary, large scale, multi-year datacenter construction and lease projects.

 

We are looking for a passionate, high-energy individual to help build the cloud datacenters that power the world’s largest online services.  In this role you will provide both coordination and technical support the project managers within your region aligning priorities with the EPC functions while supporting the team to overcome obstacles.  While this role can be primarily remote, we are looking for leaders located near one of our regional hub locations. Qualifications

Qualifications:

  • Experience managing cross-functional and/or cross-team projects.
  • Bachelor's Degree AND relevant years experience in engineering, product/technical program management, data analysis, or product development OR equivalent experience.

Preferred, not required: 

  • Chartered / Professional Engineer / Project Manager or Registered Architect   
  • Formal Project Management training and qualification, PMP, Diploma, Prince etc

  • Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: 
  • Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Responsibilities

The EPC Project Engineer / Coordinator is expected to support and coordinate fast-track project execution leveraging a matrixed team of dedicated and functional support team members. Holds self and others accountable; delegates tasks and leadership responsibilities as appropriate to foster growth.  

 

 EPC Project Engineer / Coordinator

  • Coordinate and communicate between EPC projects and remain accountable to the EPC leadership team. 
  • Lead communication of project status and help mitigate challenges promoting project success 
  • Maintain active engagement from CO+I Partners and Functional teams. 
  • Supports program & project goals for teams, assigns overall responsibilities, ensures performance measurements, and seeks and delivers feedback to achieve timely results. 
  • Have excellent communication, organization, and leadership skills. 
  • Must be able to work with other technical and non-technical groups in a fast-paced environment and do so with an even temperament.   
  • Must be a person of integrity, be methodical, detailed-oriented with a strong work ethic.  

EPC Work Environment

 Engineering Engagement 

  • Investigation and project scoping
  • Working with external and internal stakeholders to undertake feasibility studies
  • Provide findings and internal reporting from the feasibility study, and provide proposed solution
  • Coordinate a team of architects, engineers and designers and deliver projects aligned with the defined scope, schedule, and budget.    
  • Collaborate with on-site operations teams to perform feasibility / Gap analysis for conversion of existing data center spaces to new / upgraded uses. 
  • Implementation management and overseeing compliance to the execution process

Ownership & Drives Results

  • In alignment with management priorities, holds self-accountable for EPC delivery of projects. Identifies unaddressed issues within area of work and resolves, escalates, or finds the appropriate owner to ensure the highest level of quality. 
  • Makes decisions and influences partners to facilitate and accomplish complex issues impacting global construction projects (e.g., establishing and executing upon team goals, following business processes, engaging vendor relationships, and fostering cross-group collaboration efforts with the agreed-upon project strategy and milestones).

Change Management

  • Analyzes the industry for best practices and internal process flows to recommend changes resulting in cost savings, enhanced customer service, or improved asset management.

 Managing Resources & Coordination

  • Manages any alterations made to the project scope and adjusts the overall plan to accommodate for these changes.
  • Shapes and implements regional construction execution plans. Initializes and identifies opportunities to discuss and integrate lessons learned.

 Goal Alignment

  • Develops and maintains productive relationships with implementation partners, Operations, Security, Authorities having jurisdiction, and regional corporate leadership. Engages and sources other internal teams (e.g., Security (OSSC), Information Technology (MSIT), Legal, Project Engineering, Business Risk Management, etc.) to maintain the corporate vision and create goals for the project. Advises and directs internal teams and supporting specialty consultants to update and edit the Basis of Design (BOD) as needed.

 Safety and Regulation

  • Demands safe environments/work sites and participates in governance, policies, and decision-making regarding risk compliance and management.

 Risk Mitigation

  • Establishes and communicates risk mitigation goals and develops metrics, dashboards and/or scorecards to drive progress. Presents and reports goals and progress to regional executive leadership.

 Financial Acumen & Budget and Controls

  • Creates, applies, and shares best practices to identify and drive cost-effective solutions for the strategic and tactical delivery of a construction project. Applies influence, strategy, and decision-making to drive solutions, schedules, and manage change with clients, sponsors, vendors, and operational units including lower-level staff and internal partners.
  • Develops and reports on scope, schedule, and budget of project. Implements project controls in work activities (e.g., project expenditure requests (PERs), Professional Service Requests (PSRs), change orders, and pay applications). Reduces cycle time, improves quality, and identifies and implements ways to lower cost.
