What you’d be doing in this role

As Canva scales change continues to be part of our DNA. But we like to think that's all part of the fun. So this will give you the flavour of the type of things you'll be working on when you start, but this will likely evolve.

As our new Senior Machine Learning Engineer in Layout AI you will work closely with a cross functional team of Frontend, Backend and Machine Learning Engineers to improve our understanding of designs and build new Design AI capabilities and experiences.

At the moment, this role is focused on:

• Build systems to generate designs – working closely with other ML engineers, backend engineers, frontend engineers, designers, and product managers to deliver cutting-edge design generation systems and techniques that empower users.
• Facilitate knowledge sharing and effectively advocate for engineering needs to non-technical stakeholders within the group
• Use AI to automate design decision for our users
• Model initiative and ownership in achieving goals, improving processes and solutions
• Identify opportunities for cross-team collaboration to work on new ideas and improvements that help achieve our goals

You're probably a match if

• Strong industry experience in the machine learning /software engineering role with a Product/SaaS company, visual AI experience preferred.
• You are experienced in building and deploying machine learning models and have a strong understanding of end-to-end machine learning pipelines and components. You’re also passionate about how model behaviour can translate into impactful user experiences.
• Experience or strong interest in design. This team works at the intersection of engineering and design so a genuine desire or proven experience in this space is essential
• You have great research skills with the ability to stay abreast of the latest developments in deep learning and generative AI. You are capable to translate cutting-edge research into practical solutions that enhance Canva’s content library and user experience.
• You are proficient in Python coding, interviews will be in Python.
• You are familiar with several of the following: PyTorch, Kubernetes, Docker, Solr/ElasticSearch, SQL.
• You have a solid understanding of Computer Science/Engineering fundamentals and first principles covering system design, data structures, architecture, and design patterns.
• You have a Bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering / Science or Mathematics.

About the team

Layout AI is essential in fulfilling Canva's mission to 'empower the world to design' by using AI to automate design decisions for our users, irrespective of their design skill level.

Our team is exploring new territory in AI-powered design, working at the intersection of machine learning, design, and software engineering. We're building the foundations that will enable Canva to rapidly experiment with and deploy new AI-driven design capabilities, ultimately empowering our users to create amazing designs regardless of their skill level.

Whilst conventional modern ML techniques clearly play a role in Design AI, much of it does not easily apply to working with structured design data or operating within the constraints of a browser-based editor. To overcome these challenges, it’s essential to blend generative AI (image generation, LLMs), modern ML methods, low-mid tech algorithms, design domain expertise, heuristics, and innovative new approaches.
