Rebellion seeks a Senior Technical Animator to collaborate with artists, programmers, and designers. Responsibilities include developing and maintaining animation pipeline documentation, collaborating on character creation from concept to rigging, researching and implementing new animation technologies, acting as a liaison between teams, evaluating and refining work, and mentoring the animation team. The ideal candidate possesses proven game industry experience, proficiency in 3D software (Maya, MotionBuilder, Blender), strong understanding of anatomy and motion, experience with rigging and motion capture, programming skills (MEL, Python), and familiarity with 3D math. The role offers a hybrid work model with relocation assistance and numerous benefits.

Description

For 30 years we’ve been independently developing and publishing incredible video games at our multiple studios founded by Jason & Chris Kingsley, but Rebellion is more than just games. We have our own film and mo-cap studio, we create board games, publish books, and through 2000AD, publish comics and graphic novels such as the amazing Judge Dredd. 

We are looking for an experienced Senior Technical Animator to join our talented team and work on various exciting game projects. This role involves collaborating with other artists, programmers, and designers to enhance character animation and performance for our growing portfolio of games, including unannounced titles.

This role is based at our riverside headquarters in Oxford, offering a creative and relaxed atmosphere where teamwork drives our success. We can provide a relocation package, including moving assistance, temporary accommodation, and full support to ensure a smooth transition to your new environment.

We believe in the power of face-to-face collaboration and encourage working from our Oxford headquarters. However, we understand that flexibility matters, so we’re open to discussing hybrid options based on individual needs.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and maintain comprehensive documentation on tools, methods, processes, and training for the animation pipeline.
  • Collaborate with character artists and animators throughout the creation process, from concept to final rigging, ensuring functionality and performance goals are met.
  • Research and implement innovative technologies to enhance animation workflows and efficiency.
  • Act as a key liaison between code, design, art, and animation teams to deliver optimised and immersive game experiences.
  • Evaluate and refine work to align with technical constraints and artistic direction.
  • Mentor and inspire the animation team, fostering a positive and creative work environment.

Requirements

  • Proven experience as a Technical Animator in the game industry with a strong portfolio showcasing your work.
  • Proficiency in 3D software like Maya, MotionBuilder, or Blender, with expertise in rigging and skinning.
  • Strong understanding of anatomy, body mechanics, and motion.
  • Proven experience with body, facial, and prop rigging, including motion capture workflows.
  • Programming skills in MEL and Python for tool creation and automation.
  • Familiarity with 3D math, including linear algebra, vectors, and matrices.
  • Experience creating tools or UI using Maya commands, QT, or PySide.
  • Ability to develop complex rigging systems and corrective joint setups using vectors is a plus.
