Job Description

As a Senior Sound Designer at Side Montreal, you will be responsible for crafting, developing, producing, and integrating sound environments for video games and other visual media. This role involves leading projects, mentoring team members, and collaborating with game design teams to create captivating soundscapes and immersive experiences. You will design and edit high-quality sound assets, implement dynamic mixing hierarchies, and integrate audio using middleware and game engines, ensuring the creative vision is brought to life.
Must have:
  • Design and edit top-quality sound assets for video games and visual media.
  • Design audio systems using middleware and game engines for dynamic mixing.
  • Lead projects, plan, and organize sound design content.
  • Integrate sound assets in Wwise, FMOD, Unreal, Unity, and custom engines.
  • Synchronize and mix audio to linear media.
  • Test, find, and fix audio-related bugs.
  • Understand basic scripting for game audio and workflow improvement.
  • Work collaboratively with internal teams and external partners.
  • Contribute to documentation, project tracking, and procedures.
  • Provide mentorship and coaching to team members.
  • Offer regular feedback and support professional development.
  • Support informed decision-making impacting team operations and performance.
  • Identify opportunities for process improvements.
  • Assist in onboarding new team members.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships within the business.
  • Adhere to company Security, Confidentiality, Health and Safety procedures.
  • Adhere to company IT and HR procedures.
  • Understand ethical behavior and business practices.
  • Substantial experience in game sound design on shipped major projects.
  • Advanced knowledge in sound creation and proficiency in DAW (Reaper or Pro Tools).
  • Good understanding of audio pipeline and advanced integration tasks in game engines.
  • Proficiency with spreadsheets and collaboration tools (Confluence, Jira, Trello).
  • Proficiency with source controls (Git, SVN, Perforce).
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Experience in supporting and mentoring team members.
  • Work closely with other disciplines to improve workflows and achieve game vision.
Good to have:
  • Proficiency in UE5 game engine
  • Passion for video games

Description

Purpose of Job:

As a Senior Sound Designer at Side Montreal, your responsibilities will be crafting, developing, producing and integrating the sound environment for video games and other visual media and may include leading projects and mentoring team members.

You will lead in sound and display your passion for video games which will enable you to build captivating soundscapes, providing players and spectators with an immersive experience. You will play a key role in bringing the creative vision to life, working in collaboration with audio staff and the game design team.

Duties and Key Responsibilities:

  • Designing and editing top quality sound assets for use in video games, trailers and other visual media, in respect to the project’s style and creative direction.
  • Designing systems, through a deep understanding of middleware and game engines, allowing for dynamic mixing hierarchies and audio systems in both stereo and surround environments, in collaboration with the game design teams.
  • Leading projects in planning, organizing sound design-related content, working closely with the creative director and project managers.
  • Integrating sound assets in audio middleware (Wwise, FMOD) and game engines (Unreal, Unity, custom game engines).
  • Syncing and mixing audio to linear media.
  • Testing, finding and fixing audio related bugs.
  • Understanding basic scripting as it pertains to game audio and workflow improvement.
  • Working collaboratively, attend meetings with the team and external partners.
  • Contributing to documentation, project tracking and procedures.

Senior responsibilities:

  • Provide mentorship and coaching to team members.
  • Offer regular feedback and support professional development by monitoring and evaluating performance.
  • Support in making informed decisions that impact operations and overall performance within the team.
  • Identify opportunities for process improvements.
  • Assist in the onboarding of new team members and ensure they are integrated smoothly into the business.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships within the business.

  • Adhere to the company IT and HR procedures and ensure the compliance of the team.
  • Understand ethical behaviour and business practices, and ensure that own behaviour and the behaviour of others is consistent with these standards and aligns with the values of the organisation.

Knowledge, Experience and Skills:

  • Substantial experience in game sound design working in key positions for major projects that have shipped.
  • Advanced knowledge in sound creation and highly proficient in using a DAW (Reaper or Pro Tools), in sync with visual material.
  • Able to demonstrate a good understanding of the audio pipeline working with middleware and can execute advanced integration tasks in at least one game engine (UE5 preferably).
  • Proficiency working with spreadsheets and collaboration tools, such as Confluence, Jira and Trello).
  • Proficiency working with source controls (Git, SVN, Perforce).
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Experience in supporting, and mentoring team members.
  • Working closely with other disciplines on the team to improve workflows and achieve vision for the game.
  • You are passionate about video games.
