Job Description

As a Surfacing Tech Artist at WildBrain Studios, you will be responsible for creating, modifying, and managing materials, material functions, and blueprints within Unreal Engine to achieve the desired visual look. Your tasks include developing and implementing custom shader solutions, collaborating with the rigging department, maintaining project organization, optimizing assets, and troubleshooting issues. You will also uphold the art direction, implement feedback, and meet production deadlines. WildBrain Studios offers a creative environment with opportunities for growth, training, and a healthy work-life balance. You will be part of a team producing animation and award-winning content.
Must have:
  • 1+ years experience in animation or gaming using Unreal and Maya.
  • Solid knowledge of production processes and pipelines.
  • Understanding of Unreal Engine for lighting, materials, and blueprints.
  • Ability to communicate professionally and positively.
Good to have:
  • Experience in Mudbox is a benefit.
  • Knowledge in Blueprints, lighting, or Niagara VFX system.

Overview

WildBrain Studios is looking for a technical, Unreal Engine experienced Surfacing Artist to join our team!

In this role you’ll have exceptional skills and experience in surfacing and texturing while responsible for the creation, modification and management of materials, material functions and blueprints for the surfacing department in order to achieve the required look target.

Responsibilities & Qualifications

What You’ll Do: 

  • Develop and implement materials, material functions, and custom shader solutions within Unreal Engine.
  • Collaborate with the rigging department to integrate animated attributes into assets using Blueprints.
  • Maintain project organization and adhere to established pipeline documentation and standards.
  • Optimize textures, materials, and other Unreal assets for performance and memory efficiency.
  • Contribute to troubleshooting and problem-solving across departments to ensure smooth asset integration.
  • Uphold the art direction defined by the Art Director 
  • Implement notes and feedback from directors and supervisors in a timely and qualitative manner 
  • Communicate with seniors and leads on concerns ahead of time 
  • Meet production deadlines and maintain regular communication with the production team
  • Ensure the successful execution of the creative choices in Unreal
  • Collaborate with the team to set up new shows in our Unreal Pipeline
  • Ensure that the successful flow of assets and data is maintained throughout all pipeline steps 

 

What You’ll Bring: 

  • 1+ years of experience in animation, video game or film industry  using Unreal and Maya
  • Highly motivated, pro-active, with a solid work ethic and positive attitude 
  • Solid knowledge of the production process and pipeline 
  • Able to troubleshoot problems and think creatively to resolve technical issues
  • Understanding of Lighting, material setups, surfacing, blueprints within Unreal Engine
  • Ability to communicate in a professional and positive manner 
  • Ability to multitask, prioritize and manage time efficiently 
  • Excellent visual skills and attention to detail 
  • Encouraging attitude towards feedback and new initiative
  • Excellent experience in Unreal or another game engine 
  • knowledge in Maya, Zbrush, Substance or Mari and Photoshop 

 

Nice to Have: 

  • Experience in Mudbox is a benefit  
  • Knowledge in Blueprints, lighting or Niagara VFX system  

 

 

Pay Range: $1000 - $1500 per week.

Candidates are paid within the range posted, but their exact pay will vary based on the level, responsibilities and expectations of the role. We also take into consideration the experience and skills that individual brings, with consideration of our internal equity.
