As the Assistant Site Manager, you'll be second-in-command of a team specializing in locomotive repair and materials. You'll be responsible for team performance, with a focus on training, troubleshooting, and overseeing the tooling/repair processes. You'll create work scopes, provide technical expertise, and communicate with the customer and management. This role requires a customer-centric focus while ensuring adherence to safety regulations and contract requirements, involving in-depth understanding of locomotive maintenance. This position involves managing teams and instructing key programs.
Must have:
  • Bachelor's degree in a technical discipline or equivalent experience
  • Minimum of 3 years of operations, services, engineering, or military maintenance experience
  • Proficiency in MS Office applications
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Success in a customer-facing operations environment
Good to have:
  • Level 2 Qualified (or in progress)
  • Experience in a shop environment

Who will you be working with?

Reporting to the Sr. Onsite Service Manager, the Assistant Site Manager is the second in command of a dynamic operations team of subject matter experts in locomotive repair and materials – all geared towards assisting our customer to keep their locomotives running at optimal levels.

What do we want to know about you?

  • Preferred: Bachelors’ degree in a technical discipline from an accredited college or university
    • Or 4+ years of military experience (preferably in a maintenance related specialty)
    • Or an undergraduate degree in a non-technical discipline with at least 2 years of applicable professional experience
    • Or a High School Diploma / GED with a minimum of 4 years of applicable professional experience
    • Or associate degree in technical discipline with a minimum of 2 years professional work experience
  • An additional minimum of 3 years of operations, services, engineering, or military maintenance experience
  • Preferred: Level 2 Qualified (or actively in progress towards completion)
  • Proficiency in MS office applications
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrated success in a fast paced, customer facing operations environment 
  • Previous experience, or the ability to be successful in, a customer facing job function 
  • Experience, willingness, and ability to work in shop environment and to work various shifts on various days as required, including having a flexible work schedule to perform auditing and training on various shifts.
  • The ability to maintain reliable and predictable attendance
  • A high level of dependability, a great attitude, and an ability to work well with a team towards achieving a common goal

What will your typical day look like?

Wabtec Field Services employees work inside locomotive diesel repair shops located on our customer’s (CSX) property, and work side by side with our customer, including their management teams.

This is a unique aspect to this role in that you are essentially always in front of the customer, which requires a heightened since of awareness and customer centric focus, but also enables you to see the immediate impact of your contributions on a daily basis. Other main tasks you could expect to carry out on most days would include:  

  • Train new locomotive maintenance technicians (TA’s)
  • Oversee the tooling/repair processes
  • Higher level work planning and troubleshooting with the customer
  • Create work scopes for new projects and review the progress of current/ongoing projects
  • Provide technical expertise to railroad employees and management as well as Wabtec employees, including troubleshooting, material handling, tooling, safety procedures, and contract requirement clarification
  • Lead a technical team and provide training / mentorship to the customer and Wabtec employees
  • Manage and provide instruction on key programs and procedures
  • Provide clear communication to customer employees, customer management and management on work to be performed, equipment status, productivity, and process improvements, and liaison with other departments as necessary
  • Work with customer employees and management to promote, maintain, and drive continuous improvement in safe work practices while monitoring productivity, quality assurance, and adherence to contract requirements
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable regulations, OSHA work practices, and industry / site specific work rules
  • Make risk assessments balancing customer requests with Wabtec requirements
  • Establish production plan for labor, material, and logistics
  • Work with various software systems (MS Office, Oracle, JD Edwards, SAP) to manage material, labor plans, and other systemic requirements
  • All other duties as required

  • Wearing all required personal protective gear (hardhat, steel toe boots, ear plugs, eye protection) throughout the day

  • Working overnight shifts and multiple days in a row, as required
  • You may also be asked to perform other duties outside of your function or trade, for which adequate training will be provided if necessary.

Our job titles may span more than one career level. The salary range for this role is between

$77,400.00-$110,300.00

The actual salary offered to a candidate may be influenced by a variety of factors, such as: training, transferable skills, work experience, education, business needs, market demands and work location.
