Job Description

Kabam is seeking a Backend Software Engineer to join their Marvel Contest of Champions team. The role involves building and maintaining backend systems for high performance and seamless player experiences. Responsibilities include writing, testing, and maintaining code, collaborating with teams, debugging software issues, and documenting code. The engineer will assist in designing and architecting scalable, secure backend systems, implementing server-side logic, developing RESTful APIs, and working with game designers on LiveOps tools and features. This is a hybrid position with two days per week in the Vancouver studio.

We are looking for a Backend Software Engineer to join our Marvel Contest of Champions team. In this role, you’ll play a key part in building and maintaining the backend systems that support our game teams, ensuring high performance and seamless player experiences. You'll work closely with other engineers and cross-functional teams to develop scalable, secure systems and tools that bring in-game events, features, and live content to life.

This is a hybrid position, with two in-office days per week at our Downtown Vancouver studio.

In this role, you can expect to be involved in:

  • Writing, testing, and maintaining code following coding standards and best practices.
  • Collaborating effectively with team members, participating in code reviews, and adhering to established development processes.
  • Debugging and solving software issues, providing effective solutions.
  • Maintaining clear and concise documentation for code and project-related materials.
  • Continuously learning and improving technical skills and knowledge.
  • Communicating progress, challenges, and updates to team members and stakeholders.
  • Adhering to project deadlines and milestones, and managing tasks efficiently.
  • Seeking mentorship and sharing knowledge to contribute to team growth.

  • Backend:
  • Assisting in designing and architecting backend systems with a focus on scalability, performance, and security.
  • Implementing server-side logic, including APIs, databases, authentication systems, and data processing pipelines.
  • Developing RESTful APIs, UI interfaces, and data visualization tools.
  • Collaborating with game designers to understand LiveOps tools and game feature requirements.
  • Participating in design discussions, providing technical insights and feasibility assessments.
  • Implementing LiveOps tools and features, including in-game events, content updates, player rewards, and analytics systems.
  • Assisting in integrating backend systems with the game client to support functionality.


To be successful in this role, your background includes:

  • 3+ years of experience in software development, preferably in game development
  • Solid technical experience in Node.js, React.js, Javascript/Typescript
  • Shipped multiple titles releases on Console, PC, or Mobile
  • Experience in Android / iOS Mobile application development
  • Strong database experience (any RDBMS, preferably MongoDB)
  • Experience working on a RESTful API system
  • Good experience working with source control
  • Experience dealing with scalability and performance optimization
  • Experience working with Google Cloud / AWS
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent experience
  • Professional proficiency with multiple game engines, or proven ability to pick-up new ones
  • Ability to write clean, simple, well-documented code from design requirements 
  • Able to effectively communicate and translate between general ideas and technical practices
  • Proven track record of working independently and collaboratively in a dynamic team setting
  • Up-to-date knowledge on the latest mobile gaming trends
  • Ability to effectively communicate with technical and non-technical team members
  • Experience working in Agile, Kanban, or similar project management methodologies
