The Science Programs Specialist contributes to multidisciplinary scientific projects supporting the Science Operations team's strategic plans. This role involves leading and coordinating applied research projects focused on animal care, welfare, and population management. Responsibilities include data collection, analysis, reporting, collaboration with internal/external partners, contributing to team teaching commitments, training cast members, serving on the leadership team, sharing project findings, and enhancing guest experiences. The ideal candidate possesses experience publishing in peer-reviewed journals, presenting scientific work, designing research projects (including statistical analysis), managing large-scale projects, and strong communication skills. Experience working in a zoological institution and teaching university-level courses is preferred.

Job Summary:

About the Role & Team

As the Science Programs Specialist, you will contribute to multidisciplinary scientific projects in support of the Science Operations team’s strategic plans. The Science team is a dynamic, 28-person team consisting of experts from multiple disciplines focused on behavior, endocrinology, cognition, behavioral husbandry, population biology, environmental monitoring and welfare that contribute to the care and welfare of animals living across Disney’s parks and resorts.

In this role, you will report to the Science Operations Manager.

What You Will Do

  • Lead and coordinate (including data collection, analysis, reporting) applied research projects with an emphasis on animal care and welfare topics, as well as population management focused projects in support of animal collection planning initiatives
  • Collaborate with both internal and external partners to identify, prioritize, and conduct applied management and technical projects to support operational and industry needs
  • Contribute to the Science Operations team’s teaching commitments including courses designed for Animal Program Cast Members and local university students
  • Train Cast in support of scientific and operational projects including development of training materials, conducting trainings, and evaluating training effectiveness
  • Serve on the Science Operations Leadership team, leading by example with an innovative and growth mindset that emphasizes the generation of novel ideas and solution-oriented approaches to operational challenges
  • Share project findings externally in presentation and publication formats
  • Help create and deliver quality guest experiences that showcase the Science team’s contributions to evidence-based animal care at Disney and for the broader zoo and aquarium industry

Required Qualifications & Skills

  • Experience publishing in peer reviewed scientific journals
  • Experience presenting scientific work to different audiences
  • Proficiency in designing research projects, including statistical analysis
  • Ability to optimally manage large scale scientific and/or operational projects from conceptualization to completion
  • Strong communication skills in both written and oral formats
  • Experience working as part of a larger team with diverse stakeholders

Preferred Qualifications

  • Minimum of five years of experience working for a zoological institution
  • Experience conducting research with more than one taxonomic group of animals
  • Experience teaching university level courses

Education

  • Masters or PHD in Biology/Zoology/Psychology/Animal Science or related field
