Romero Games seeks an experienced Environment Artist (3-5 years) to contribute to a major upcoming FPS title. Responsibilities encompass collaborating with art, design, and tech teams to create immersive game environments; utilizing geographical and architectural knowledge; adhering to artistic vision and technical constraints; balancing visual quality and performance; building modular and reusable assets in Unreal Engine; and creating compelling narratives through environmental design. The ideal candidate will have experience with PBR materials, tileable textures, kitbash systems, and procedural techniques. Remote work is possible.

Join Romero Games as we develop John Romero’s next First Person Shooter in partnership with a major publisher! This is an unprecedented opportunity to join a thriving independent development studio and work on a high-profile title that will be played by millions of gamers worldwide.

We are looking for an Environment Artist with a keen eye for detail and a passion for creating immersive game worlds. This role is ideal for someone with 3–5 years of experience in real-time environment creation and at least one published title (ideally AAA). You’ll collaborate with a talented team of asset, material, VFX, and lighting artists to craft visually stunning and performance-optimized environments.

This position is open to remote work for the right candidate, with the option to relocate to our office in Galway, Ireland. 

Please note: This is not an entry-level position.

What you will do:

  • Collaborate with art, design, and tech teams to build amazing game environments

  • Use your knowledge of geography and architecture to craft immersive settings that support both narrative and gameplay

  • Work closely with the Art Director and our Lead Artist to align your work with the game’s overall artistic vision

  • Take ownership of assigned environments and props while adhering to the project’s artistic style and technical constraints

  • Balance visual quality and performance, ensuring assets meet the requirements of real-time rendering

  • Build environment assets in a modular and reusable way, creating blueprints in Unreal

What you need to have:

  • 3–5 years of professional experience creating environments in Unreal Engine

  • Strong creativity and commitment to delivering high-quality work

  • Great communication and problem-solving skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across disciplines

  • Solid understanding of PBR materials, tileable textures, and game-ready asset workflows

  • Experience with building kitbash systems and using procedural techniques and PCG

  • A positive attitude towards receiving feedback and sharing knowledge with the team

  • A strong portfolio showcasing your environment art skills

  • You are able to create storytelling through environment assets

  • A passion for games and enthusiasm for creating immersive worlds

What is nice to have:

  • Experience with version control systems like Perforce

  • Skills in advanced material creation using tools such as Substance Designer or similar software

  • Familiarity with foliage creation workflows, including tools like SpeedTree or similar

  • Experience optimizing assets and environments for real-time performance

  • Knowledge of photogrammetry workflows and their application in game environments

  • Understanding of lighting fundamentals and collaboration with lighting artists to enhance mood and atmosphere
