Job Description

As a Senior Applied Researcher at eBay, you will lead improvements, automation, and scaling of data-heavy processes. You will work on diverse projects like Image Quality scoring and Automatic Taxonomy Improvement. Responsibilities include shaping the department's vision, defining project scopes, building machine learning models, mentoring junior peers, and presenting research in public forums. You will collaborate with management and product management. The role requires strong analytical and communication skills to deliver impactful solutions for eBay customers. The job involves handling complexity and contribute to the company's vision for global commerce.
Must have:
  • M.Sc. or Ph.D. in related field with 7+ years of experience
  • Experience in classification, regression, NLP, clustering, Deep Learning
  • Experience in production-grade coding in Python or Java
  • Experience in Big Data processing frameworks such as Hadoop, SQL, Spark
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
Good to have:
  • Publications at top-tier conferences and published patents
  • Open source tool building/commits to popular threads
  • Experience on Language models and KG building

The Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and Landing Page teams define and build features that optimize the way customers browse our inventory and help them easily find and reach relevant eBay pages when searching on search engines like Google, Bing, Yahoo, etc. With literally hundreds of millions of products listed on eBay globally at any time, the scale at which eBay has to consider search engine optimization puts our team in a unique position to innovate and provide immediate value to the business.

The SEO Landing Page Platform holds the buyer intent data definition for our category and model landing pages. These pages serve as important destinations for buyers who come from search engines like Google as well as those who are browsing the eBay site. The Linking Services connect those pages and enable them to show up in navigational elements like the breadcrumb and category navigation. The operational tools provide the interface for manual intervention and eventual automation of those operational tasks. 

What Will You Do?

​We are looking for seasoned Applied Researchers to join us and help lead improvements, automation, and scaling of our data-heavy processes. Our Senior Researchers tackle such diverse and challenging projects on Image Quality scoring; Automatic Taxonomy Improvement; Entity Resolution of rich, hierarchical Entities; and Conflict Resolution between different representations of the same Entity. Further, they help us design these separate projects and envision how they come together to create and power new experiences that surprise and delight our Customers. ​Job Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with Management and Product Management on shaping the department’s vision and roadmap

  • Help define and refine project scopes, goals, and metrics

  • ​Seek scientifically valid solutions that deliver real value to eBay customers

  • Carefully measure your output and impact in order to learn and improve over time

  • Collaborate with Operations team to ensure the quality of any human-labeled data required

  • ​Build Machine Learning models and data pipelines to deliver insightful yet practical solutions

  • Mentor more junior peers, as well as review their work and provide frequent feedback and advice

  • Promote Scientific rigor and standards, as well as code quality and craftsmanship within the team - especially among your less experienced peers

  • ​Present key technical and novel research work in public forums and conferences

  • Help interview and hire additional, exceptional teammates!

 

Minimum Qualifications

  • M.Sc. or Ph.D. in Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics, or equivalent field with 7+ years of industrial experience in Applied Machine Learning

  • ​Industrial experience with multiple of the following: classification, regression, NLP, clustering, Deep Learning / Neural Networks, Reinforcement Learning, or related

  • Significant Experience in Production-grade coding in a high-level language such as Python or Java

  • ​Experience in Big Data processing frameworks, e.g. Hadoop, SQL, Spark

  • ​Excellent verbal and written communication and collaboration skills

  • Thought leadership and mentoring skills

Additional Qualifications

  • ​Significant track of publications at top-tier conferences and published patents.

  • Open source tool building/commits to popular threads.

  • Experience on Language models and KG building
