Must have:
  • 8+ years of UI design experience with focus on desktop, web, and mobile.
  • Excellent knowledge of user-centered design processes and best practices.
  • Ability to define and communicate UX strategy.
  • Experience with design and prototyping tools like Figma and Adobe Suite.
  • Ability to work well with multi-disciplinary/multi-cultural teams.
Good to have:
  • Master's in Human Computer Interaction, Industrial Design, or related field.
  • Background in scientific, healthcare, or enterprise B2B.

Illumina is looking for a Staff Visual Designer to help drive the User Experience vision and strategy for next generation genomic solutions that will advance human health and create a world without fear of diseases. You will be responsible for driving the user experience across a wide array of projects, and must be passionate about understanding the underlying personas, use cases, goals, and pain points of our customers, and use these insights to deliver quality products and features. You will report into the Director of User Experience Design, part of Illumina’s User Experience Design team. The User Experience Design team is part of a larger Experience Design department, inclusive of User Experience Research, Industrial Design, Human Factors & Ergonomics, and User Experience teams. The department is part of Illumina’s Research and Development organization, which is the area responsible for all scientific research and product development across Illumina. All About You Responsibilities: * Identify, design and optimize end-to-end user workflows that meet user needs * Design creative solutions for desktop, web, & mobile applications using modern design methods in a variety of product development methodologies including Agile frameworks and Phase-Gate approaches * Develop high level and detailed storyboards, wireframes, mock-ups, and prototypes to effectively communicate design concepts * Collaborate with Product Management and Engineering to understand and incorporate business and technical requirements in design strategies * Collaborate with technical leads to negotiate design requirements and play an active role in design iterations * Partner with User Researchers on user testing activities to understand design and usability issues and propose changes to solve them * Manage assigned design projects, coordinating design activities with other designers and researchers, to ensure delivery of products that meet business objectives and delight customers * Be able to lead cross-functional workshops, aligning diverse perspectives and facilitating problem-solving and ideation sessions * Be a strong advocate of user centered design processes, ensuring that these processes are foundational to all the projects you oversee All listed tasks and responsibilities are deemed as essential functions to this position; however, business conditions may require reasonable accommodations for additional task and responsibilities. Required skills & qualifications * 8+ years of experience in UI Design with emphasis on desktop, web, and mobile product design * Excellent knowledge of all aspects of user centered design process, methodology, and UI design best practices * Ability to define and communicate a cohesive forward-thinking UX strategy that supports broader business objectives * Ability to breakdown design work and to effectively delegate them to other designers and team members * Demonstrated experience with turning customer insights into comprehensive design requirements and interaction designs * Ability to know when to leverage existing design patterns and when an innovative approach to a design problem is called for * Excellent analytical ability, especially with regards to understanding user behavior and design theories * Advanced experience with design and prototyping tools such as Figma, Sketch, and the Adobe Creative Suite * A proven track record of working well with multi-disciplinary/multi-cultural teams, and an ability to embrace collaboration with all team members, including product, project, and development team members as well as UX colleagues * Knowledge of the software development process and ability to communicate well with software development teams Preferred skills & qualifications: * Masters in Human Computer Interaction, Industrial Design, Human Factors or other design-related field is preferred * Background in scientific, healthcare, or enterprise B2B is a plus At Illumina, we strive to foster a diverse and inclusive workplace by cultivating an environment in which everyone contributes to our mission.
