Job Description

Motive is seeking an Engineering Manager for Embedded Equipment Monitoring. The role involves defining and implementing a technology vision for new product features related to equipment monitoring, managing engineering teams, and developing a long-term product roadmap in collaboration with product teams. Responsibilities include leading technical design discussions, driving execution and launch of functionalities, and ensuring high quality operations. The manager will also develop and evolve development processes, establish best practices, and hire, manage, and develop a diverse team of engineers, providing technical guidance and career development. Additionally, contributing to development tasks like coding and feature verification is expected to gain deeper understanding of the codebase and business processes.
Must have:
  • Bachelors or Masters in Engineering or equivalent experience
  • 8+ years in Embedded software Engineering
  • Hands-on experience on Linux based multimedia embedded systems
  • Proficient in C/C++ coding skills
  • Experience implementing and optimizing algorithms on connected devices
  • Experience deploying device software on large scale devices
  • 3+ years managing 10+ engineers
  • 5+ years building high-scale distributed systems
  • Ability to perform architectural work
  • Strong experience with embedded C/C++, RTOS
  • Hands-on experience with wireless communication protocols
  • Proficient with firmware debugging tools
  • Excellent communication, organization, and cross-team collaboration skills
Good to have:
  • Experience in cloud-connected devices and data pipelines is a plus
  • Familiarity with low-power design techniques
  • Familiarity with bootloaders, OTA, and secure firmware practices

About the Role: 

Motive Technologies is looking for an Engineering Manager, Embedded Equipment Monitoring  software, who is passionate about building new product driver equipment monitoring  features. We need an experienced and ambitious leader who can think architecturally, articulate a compelling long-term technical vision, develop and execute realistic implementation plans, and manage our Engineering team.

What You’ll Do: 

  • Define and implement a technology vision for building new product features for equipment monitoring 
  • Manage the product and business outcomes of the engineering teams.
  • Develop a long-term product roadmap in collaboration with product teams.
  • Lead technical design discussions by collaborating with multiple teams including Device Device software, Product, Backend , AI team & Data Science teams.
  • Drive the execution, launch, and daily operations of functionalities for internal/external customers at consistently high quality, Introduce and continuously evolve cutting-edge development, release, and operations processes
  • Develop, document, and improve best practices and coding standards
  • Hire, manage, and develop a diverse team of highly qualified Engineers. This includes providing expert technical guidance, effective coaching and career development
  • As needed, contribute to development tasks such as coding and feature verifications to assist teams with release commitments, to gain and deepen an understanding of our codebase and business processes

What We’re Looking For: 

  • Bachelors or Masters in Engineering or equivalent  experience
  • 8+ years of experience in Embedded software Engineering working on cameras or embedded systems
  • Hands-on experience on Linux based multimedia embedded systems.
  • Proficient in C/C++ coding skills.
  • Has experience working in implementing and optimizing algorithms on the connected devices. 
  • Experience in deploying device software on large scale devices in the field. 
  • 3+ years of experience managing 10+ engineers
  • 5+ years experience in building high-scale distributed systems for a product company
  • Ability to perform architectural work, including the development of technical designs and definition of requirements based on an explanation of business issues experienced by internal/external customers and vendors
  • Proven track record as a nimble and proactive thinker and doer, who thrives in an environment that demands excellence
  • A high degree of comfort with short release cycles, owning the full software lifecycle, and deep experience working on a product for public consumption
  • Passion for continuous experimentation and learning, coupled with a desire to make things run faster, and better
  • Demonstrated success in leading technical initiatives while partnering with cross functional teams. 
  • An opinion on and a solid understanding of what makes for a strong, healthy, and productive Engineering culture.
  • A track record as a strong individual contributor earlier in your career, with continued interest in rolling up your sleeves and pitch in with coding yourself when needed
  • Strong experience with embedded C/C++, RTOS (FreeRTOS, Zephyr, etc.), and microcontroller platforms (e.g., STM32, Nordic, TI).
  • Hands-on experience with wireless communication protocols (BLE, Wi-Fi, LTE, Zigbee, etc.).
  • Familiarity with low-power design techniques, bootloaders, OTA, and secure firmware practices.
  • Proficient with firmware debugging tools (JTAG, oscilloscopes, logic analyzers) and diagnostic methods.
  • Experience working with cloud-connected devices and data pipelines is a plus.
  • Excellent communication, organization, and cross-team collaboration skills.
Pay Transparency
Your compensation may be based on several factors, including education, work experience, and certifications. For certain roles, total compensation may include restricted stock units. The compensation range for this position will depend on where you reside. Motive uses three geographic zones to determine pay range. For this role, the compensation ranges are:

San Francisco, California

$218,000 - $273,000 USD

U.S. metropolitan areas: Los Angeles, San Diego, New York City Area, Seattle, Washington D.C.

$209,000 - $261,000 USD

Other locations in the United States

$170,000 - $213,000 USD
