Role and Purpose:
As a Senior Technical Artist in Games Development, you will be a key bridge between the art and engineering teams, responsible for optimizing the artistic workflow and ensuring the seamless integration of art assets into the game engine. Your role will involve developing and implementing tools, pipelines, and techniques to enhance the visual quality, performance, and efficiency of game assets. Working closely with artists, designers, and programmers, you will play a critical role in achieving the artistic vision while maintaining technical excellence in the game development process.
Responsibilities:
- Pipeline Development: Design, develop, and maintain a robust art pipeline for streamlined asset creation and integration into the engine. Create tools or scripts to automate tasks and increase the art team’s productivity.
- Performance Profiling: Conduct performance and memory profiling to pinpoint bottlenecks and opportunities for optimization. Propose solutions and guidance to address performance concerns.
- Asset Optimization: Improve performance and memory of game assets whilst preserving the visual fidelity of the game. Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues with assets that affect game performance. Guide junior team members in optimization techniques.
- Shaders and Material Development: Work with artists and programmers to produce performant shaders/materials for a range of requirements. Produce content that perfectly complement the projects’ visual style and quality.
- Collaboration and Communication: Partner with artists, designers, and programmers to grasp their technical needs and deliver effective solutions. Clearly communicate technical concepts and solutions to non-technical team members so that we can stay aligned and on track with projects.
- Research and Innovation: Stay at the forefront of industry trends, tools, and techniques in technical art. Experiment with new technologies and advocate for innovative solutions to improve visual quality and pipeline efficiency. Delegate responsibility in a thoughtful way to develop junior team members knowledge and understanding of new technologies.
- Design, develop, and maintain an efficient art pipeline that streamlines asset creation and integration processes.
- Create tools and scripts to automate repetitive tasks and improve the productivity of the art team.
- Collaborate with artists to ensure art assets are correctly integrated into the game engine.
- Optimize assets for performance and memory usage while maintaining visual fidelity.
- Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues related to art assets and their interactions within the game.
- Work with artists and programmers to create and optimize shaders and materials for various art assets.
- Ensure consistency in art style and visual quality across the game.
- Conduct performance and memory profiling to identify bottlenecks and areas for optimization.
- Provide technical solutions and guidance to address performance-related issues.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including artists, designers, and programmers, to understand technical requirements and provide effective solutions.
- Communicate technical concepts and solutions to non-technical team members in a clear and concise manner.
- Stay up-to-date with the latest industry trends, tools, and techniques related to technical art.
- Experiment with new technologies and propose innovative solutions to enhance the visual quality and efficiency of the art pipeline.
Requirements:
- Proven experience as a Level 2 Technical Artist in the games industry or related field.
- Proficiency in scripting languages such as Python, C#, or MEL scripting, or visual scripting e.g. Blueprint.
- Strong understanding of art asset creation, including modeling, texturing, and animation processes.
- Knowledge of various game engines and their art tools (e.g., Unity, Unreal Engine).
- Experience with shader development and material authoring.
- Solid understanding of performance optimization techniques for real-time environments.
- Familiarity with version control systems (e.g., Git) and collaborative workflows.
- Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills, with attention to detail.
- Effective communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work in a team-oriented environment.
