Job Description

Grendel is looking for a Serious Game Programming Intern who believes games can change the world. The intern will collaborate with engineers, designers, and artists to build new features for games, contribute to creative development processes, and participate in project management. The internship offers a hands-on learning experience in an award-winning game studio with mentorship from experienced programmers. The intern will work on real-world projects in a collaborative environment. The role involves a hybrid work model with 3 days in the office and 2 days from home. The intern will work on projects designed to have a meaningful impact.
Must have:
  • Experience with object-oriented programming languages (C#/C++/Java)
  • Experience with Unity3D engine
  • Experience with designing, implementing, and debugging algorithms
  • Focus on writing reusable, maintainable, and expandable code
  • Proficient in math on a high school level (HAVO/Higher General Secondary Education)
  • Fluent in English
Good to have:
  • Experience with Unreal Engine
  • Grasp of vector mathematics
  • Dutch language skills

Position Details

Period: 5 months / 20 weeks, starting in September 2025

Work hours: full-time, hybrid (3 days in our office in Leeuwarden, 2 days from home)

 

What You’ll Do

  • Collaborate with other engineers, designers and artists on building one or more new features for one of our games
  • Contribute to our creative development processes, such as brainstorming, designing and prototyping
  • Participate in our project management processes, such a sprint planning, standups, (internal) testing and evaluation

 

What We’re Looking For

  • You are experienced with an object-oriented programming language (C#/C++/Java)
  • You are experienced with the Unity3D engine
    • Experience with Unreal Engine is also accepted if you are willing to invest time to learn Unity3D
  • You are experienced with designing, implementing and debugging algorithms and data structures
  • You focus on writing reusable, maintainable and expandable code
  • You are proficient in math on a high school level (HAVO/Higher General Secondary Education)
    • A grasp of vector mathematics is beneficial
  • Fluent in English, Dutch is a bonus
  • You are socially proficient
  • You like to work in a team
  • You have an independent and proactive working attitude

  • Two or more game development related projects that give a good impression of your skills. Preferably these projects are also playable/testable, but the code is the most important.
  • Explain during your application which parts of your code you want to discuss and explain.
  • If you worked with multiple programmers on a project, make it clear which parts of the code are yours.
