Job Description

As a Software Engineering Manager, you will lead a team responsible for crucial aspects of the Identity Security Cloud Platform. You will solve complex technical challenges around scalability and reliability, reduce tech debt, and determine investment areas. Stakeholder management is important, requiring close work with Product Managers, Designers, Architects, Quality, DevOps, and Customer Facing teams. You will need to understand your team's technology and build relationships. You will also be expected to quickly reach productivity. Within the first 30 days, you will onboard, get familiar with the product and technology, get to know your leads, understand business problems, propose software architecture designs, and learn about the Top 5 Project Initiative. You will also interview stakeholders to understand goals, roadmap and challenges. By 90 days, you will motivate teams, understand technical challenges, participate in technical decision-making, implement fast changes and have regular syncs with stakeholders. By 6 months, you will be chiseling away technical debt. Your team will consistently deliver. By 1 year, your team will be aligned to the roadmap and achieving real business results. Maintaining a culture of continuous learning by coaching and developing your leaders and engineers along their chosen career paths
Must have:
  • 2+ years experience in an engineering leadership role
  • 5+ years hands-on experience as a software engineer
  • Public cloud experience, preferably AWS
  • Deep knowledge of complex and scaling SaaS products
  • Technical experience and fluency at the architectural level
  • Experience with various messaging systems, such as Kafka or SQS
  • Experience with Microservice architecture
  • Supporting and developing containerized CI/CD deployment
  • Experience architecting highly distributed systems
  • Solid technical documentation ability
  • Strong understanding of scrum and agile methodology
  • Effective leadership and mentoring ability

About the role: 

As a Software Engineering Manager, you will lead a team responsible for some of the most crucial aspects of our Identity Security Cloud Platform.

As a highly technical leader, you will help solve very complex technical challenges around scalability and reliability, you will focus on reducing tech debt and determine where investments should be made. You will be expected to reach productivity quickly.  

Stakeholder management is a significant aspect of this role; you will work closely with Product Managers, Designers, Architects, Quality, DevOps and Customer Facing teams. 

You should proactively seek to listen and find alignment with other engineering teams and stakeholders by understanding your team's technology, building strong relationships, and insisting on high-quality solutions 

Required experience & skills: 

  • 2+ years experience in an engineering leadership role

  • 5+ years hands-on experience as a software engineer

  • Public cloud experience, preferably AWS

  • Deep knowledge of complex and scaling SaaS products, agile processes and workflows, and experience implementing them 

  • Technical experience and fluency at the architectural level, enabling easy discussions with engineers 

  • Various messaging systems, such as Kafka or SQS    

  • Experience with Microservice architecture. 

  • Supporting and developing containerized CI/CD deployment such as Docker Containers, and Kubernetes

  • Experience architecting highly distributed and available systems that utilize load balancing, horizontal scalability, and high availability 

  • Solid technical documentation ability

  • Strong understanding of scrum and agile methodology

  • Effective leadership and mentoring ability

Roadmap and timeline to success: 

Within the first 30 days you will: 

  • Onboard into your new role, get familiar with our product offering and technology 

  • Get to know your leads and understand what motivates them and where they have areas of development 

  • Seek to deeply understand business problems or common engineering challenges and propose software architecture designs to solve them elegantly by abstracting useful common patterns. 

  • Learn about Top 5 Project Initiative 

  • Interview stakeholders to understand our business goals, product roadmap and challenges ahead of you 

  • Create a project schedule of the team’s work to align with our broader roadmap to maximize impact 

 

By 90 days: 

  • Motivate, encourage and challenge your teams to find optimal synergy 

  • You understand the technical challenges ahead and actively participate in technical decision making 

  • You understand your team's decision-making process and you challenge them to find more optimal solutions  

  • You’re implementing fast, iterative changes  

  • You have regular syncs with your stakeholders 

  • With all the information you have gathered during your stakeholder interviews, you are thinking 2-3 years in the future to develop a plan on how we can scale the Identity Security Cloud and enhance its reliability  

By 6 months: 

  • You are successfully chiseling away at technical debt and making significant progress  

  • Your team has found synergy and are consistently delivering on their commitments by deadline 

  • You have struck a balance of shipping new features while resolving defects  

  • Attracting and motivating excellent engineers who care about great teams and great software 

  • You have earned the trust of your team  

  • Your personal goals are on track  

  • You are a respected partner to your stakeholders 

By 1 year: 

  • Your team size and skills are aligned to your roadmap and is operating efficiently 

  • Your team is consistently achieving real business results and incremental milestones  

  • Maintain a culture of continuous learning by coaching and developing your leaders and engineers along their chosen career paths  

  • Consistently using data to objectively measure impact and optimize engineering processes  

  • Consistently meeting deadlines and coordinating with technical team members in order to deliver quality results  

Benefits and Compensation listed vary based on the location of your employment and the nature of your employment with SailPoint.

As a part of the total compensation package, this role may be eligible for the SailPoint Corporate Bonus Plan or a role-specific commission, along with potential eligibility for equity participation. SailPoint maintains broad salary ranges for its roles to account for variations in knowledge, skills, experience, market conditions and locations, as well as reflect SailPoint’s differing products, industries, and lines of business. Candidates are typically placed into the range based on the preceding factors as well as internal peer equity. We estimate the base salary, for US-based employees, will be in this range from (min-mid-max, USD):

$136,200 - $194,500 - $252,900

Base salaries for employees based in other locations are competitive for the employee’s home location.
