Job Description

As a Senior Technical Artist at BigBox VR, you will be responsible for developing and maintaining art production workflows and pipelines by creating tools, plugins, and scripts to aid artists, reduce pain points, and speed up iteration cycles. You'll also develop and drive critical features for a game editor that serves all audience types, and integrate AI features to accelerate and inspire creators. Other responsibilities include prototyping features and tools to improve workflows, maintaining a consistent art style, preparing and designing systems for VFX, optimizing environments, porting finished art to the game engine, maintaining technical documentation, and training and mentoring other artists. The role requires experience with game engines, scripting, and art techniques, as well as delivering high-quality visuals while meeting performance targets.
Must have:
  • 6+ years of Technical Artist experience on shipped games.
  • 3+ years of experience developing tools and scripts in Unity.
  • Experience with game engines like Unity, Unreal.
Good to have:
  • Experience with User Generated Content.
  • Experience with TypeScript and React.
  • Interest in AI driven solutions.

Job Details

We are BigBox VR the makers of Population: One, the most popular Battle Royale game in VR. You are a talented and broadly experienced Technical Artist who will tackle a wide variety of challenges across art pipelines. You excel at quickly building tools and refining processes to accelerate the work of the art team. You are an experienced communicator who is a collaborative problem solver, driving down iteration time so artists can focus on creating the highest fidelity possible. You have an extensive knowledge of game editors (Unity, Unreal) and are versed in modern technical art processes and standards.
Senior Technical Artist - BigBox VR Game Studio Responsibilities
  • Develop and maintain art production workflows and pipelines by creating tools, plugins, and scripts to aid artists, reduce pain points, and speed up iteration cycles.
  • Develop and drive critical features for a game editor that serves all audience types.
  • Develop and drive integrating critical AI features that will accelerate and inspire creators.
  • Prototype features and tools to improve workflows.
  • Maintain and adhere to a consistent art style and ensure technical requirements for assets are enforced.
  • Prepare and design systems for VFX, optimizing workflow and improving graphics fidelity.
  • Optimize environments to keep visual fidelity as high as possible while maintaining performance.
  • Port finished art to the game engine, assisting in asset performance and validation.
  • Maintaining technical documentation.
  • Train and mentor other artists to grow their technical skills.
Minimum Qualifications
  • 6+ years of experience working as a Technical Artist on at least one shipped game title.
  • 3+ years of experience developing and maintaining tools and developing scripts within the Unity development environment.
  • Experience with Game engines such as Unity, Unreal, and creator-facing UGC tools.
  • Experience with integrating AI models, or working with pipelines that have introduced AI integration
  • Experience with creating scripts and plugins with MEL, PyMEL, or Python.
  • Working knowledge of Maya and Unity as well as Photoshop, Premier, and Substance.
  • Experience structuring an appropriate VFX workflow/pipeline that fits the production environment.
  • Knowledge of current and next-gen art techniques, and fundamental art principles.
  • Experience delivering high-quality visuals while following memory and performance targets.
  • Knowledge to create, evaluate, and improve PBR game materials and textures.
  • Experience in pipelines for high and low-poly modeling, unwrapping, baking, texturing and material creation.
  • Understanding of graphics for rendering, modeling, texturing, shaders, rigging, animation, and lighting.
  • Experience profiling in-game assets and guiding the team in optimization to ensure that art assets are performant and fit within their budgets for draw calls, poly counts, texture memory limits, without compromising visual quality.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working on and supporting User Generated Content.
  • Experience working with TypeScript and React.
  • Interest in AI driven solutions and direct experience integrating AI models
  • Experience in Mixed Reality or Mobile pipelines.
