Job Description

As a Staff Software Engineer on the Developer Experience team at Harvey, you will build systems and tools to empower engineers to ship faster. This role involves working across the stack and with all teams to drive reliability, automation, and simplicity in developer workflows. We seek engineers who prioritize craftsmanship and are eager to shape the foundation of software development at Harvey.
Must have:
  • Design, implement, and optimize robust CI/CD pipelines.
  • Collaborate with engineering, product, and operations teams to streamline workflows.
  • Develop automation tools to improve developer experience and productivity.
  • Monitor and manage software releases, ensuring minimal downtime.
  • Lead incident management and postmortem processes.
  • Maintain clear, comprehensive documentation for release processes and infrastructure.
  • Provide technical mentorship and leadership.
  • 10+ years of experience in DevOps, Release Engineering, or DevProd roles.
  • Expertise in CI/CD best practices and tools (GitHub Actions, Jenkins, CircleCI).
  • Strong programming skills (Python, Bash, Go, or other scripting languages).
  • Excellent understanding of SDLC methodologies.
  • Exceptional communication, collaboration, and project management abilities.
  • Experience enhancing developer productivity through tooling and automation.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills for complex operational issues.
  • Experience with observability tools (Datadog, Sentry) and incident response practices (PagerDuty, IncidentIO).
  • Experience with container technologies (Docker, Kubernetes) and IaC tools (Pulumi, Terraform).

Role Overview

At Harvey, we believe the developer experience is a force multiplier. As a Staff Software Engineer on our Developer Experience team, you’ll be responsible for building the systems and tools that empower every engineer at Harvey to move and ship faster. You’ll work across the stack and with every team, driving reliability, automation, and simplicity into our developer workflows. We’re looking for engineers who care deeply about craftsmanship, and who are excited to shape the foundation of how software is built at Harvey.

This role is based in San Francisco, CA. We use an in-person work model and offer relocation assistance to new employees.

What You’ll Do

  • Design, implement, and optimize robust CI/CD pipelines to facilitate reliable, frequent software deployments
  • Collaborate closely with engineering, product, and operations teams to streamline workflows and reduce friction in the development lifecycle
  • Develop automation tools and processes to significantly improve developer experience and productivity
  • Monitor and manage software releases, ensuring minimal downtime and quick recovery from any disruptions
  • Lead incident management and postmortem processes, conducting root cause analyses to improve system reliability
  • Maintain clear, comprehensive documentation for all release processes and infrastructure systems
  • Provide technical mentorship and leadership, promoting best practices and fostering team growth

What You Have

  • 10+ years of experience in DevOps, Release Engineering, DevProd, or similar roles supporting software development environments, with proven ability to mentor and guide technical teams
  • Expertise in CI/CD best practices and tools (GitHub Actions, Jenkins, CircleCI, etc.)
  • Strong programming skills (Python, Bash, Go, or other scripting languages)
  • Excellent understanding of software development lifecycle (SDLC) methodologies
  • Exceptional communication, collaboration, and project management abilities — you make other engineers better
  • Previous experience enhancing developer productivity through tooling and automation
  • Strong troubleshooting skills and the ability to solve complex operational issues
  • Experience with observability tools (Datadog, Sentry, etc.) and incident response practices (PagerDuty, IncidentIO, etc.)
  • Experience with container technologies (Docker, Kubernetes) and infrastructure as code (IaC) tools (Pulumi, Terraform, etc.)
