Timmons Group is seeking a Geotechnical Engineer in Raleigh, NC. This role involves applying technical skills to site and building projects by testing earth materials, evaluating properties, and estimating responses to loading. Key responsibilities include geotechnical analysis and design for foundations, slope stability, earth retention, and hydraulic structures. The position requires interpreting soil and rock investigations, performing computer modeling, and preparing reports. Candidates should be able to diagnose soil challenges on construction sites.
Must have:
  • Work on engineering consulting projects involving geotechnical analysis and designs for foundations, slope stability, and hydraulic structures.
  • Perform geotechnical, civil, and structural engineering designs.
  • Specify, implement, and interpret soil and rock investigations, including drilling and in-situ testing.
  • Perform facility inspections, geotechnical computer modeling, and prepare design plans and specifications.
  • Write reports.
  • Diagnose and evaluate soil-related challenges on construction projects.
  • Observe proofrolls, diagnose fill compaction challenges, and evaluate foundation bearing soils.

Job Details

A Geotechnical Engineer applies learned skills and technical ability to site and building projects by testing earth materials, evaluating their engineering properties, and estimating the materials' response to loading.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities of a successful candidate include but are not limited to:

  • The successful candidate will work on a variety of engineering consulting projects involving traditional geotechnical engineering analysis and designs for foundations (shallow and deep), slope stability and seepage, earth retention, dams and hydraulic structures, and groundwater.
  • The position includes work on engineering project teams performing geotechnical, civil, and structural engineering designs.
  • Project Work will include specifying, implementing, and interpreting soil and rock investigations, including drilling and cone penetrometer testing and in-situ testing.
  • Performing facility inspections, geotechnical computer modeling, preparation of design plans and specifications, and writing reports is also required.
  • The ability to diagnose and evaluate soil-related challenges on construction projects is desirable, including observations of proofrolls, diagnosis of fill compaction challenges, chemical treatment of soils, and evaluation of foundation bearing soils is required
  • Working knowledge of soils within eastern Piedmont and coastal plain geology is desirable
  • This position may require out of town work assignments to meet client needs. Some work locations will feature rough terrain typical of construction sites or require lifting or moving field testing equipment
  • Safety training will be provided prior to being given work assignments on these sites

Skills/Requirements of a successful candidate include but are not limited to:

  • A BS in Civil Engineering with emphasis on Geotechnical Engineering
  • 5+ years of relevant work experience with traditional geotechnical engineering
  • Candidate must possess experience performing geotechnical engineering consulting in both private and public work sectors
  • Professional Engineer (PE) licensure or ability to obtain PE within one year
  • Strong technical skills in a wide range of geotechnical analysis and design
  • Demonstrated flexibility and willingness to modify personal schedule as required to meet project deadlines and/or client needs
  • Computer skills including word processing, spreadsheets, design software for deep foundations (Lpile, GRLWEAP), and slope stability modeling.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to lift and carry equipment weighing approximately 50 pounds.
  • Legal authorization to work in the United States without the need for sponsorship
  • Good driving record
