SUMMARY

We are seeking a highly motivated and technically strong R&D Engineer II to join our development team working on cutting-edge material constitutive modeling within the Ansys Mechanical APDL (MAPDL) platform. In this role, you will contribute to the design, development, and support of industry-leading simulation software used by top engineers and scientists worldwide.

You’ll work alongside a team of domain experts and software engineers to develop advanced nonlinear material models and implement innovative capabilities that enable simulation of real-world materials and behavior under complex conditions. This is a unique opportunity to have real-world impact, contribute to the future of engineering simulation, and grow your expertise at the intersection of mechanics, computation, and software development.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Design, research, develop, and maintain advanced material constitutive models within the Ansys MAPDL finite element solver.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to translate complex physics and customer requirements into robust, scalable software solutions.
  • Participate in technical discussions in projects involving material behavior such as plasticity, creep, damage, hyperelasticity, and viscoelasticity.
  • Apply best practices in software engineering, performance optimization, and code quality.
  • Investigate and resolve moderately complex bugs; work with QA and support teams to reproduce, diagnose, and fix customer-reported issues.
  • Support long-term planning by researching new methods and understanding competitive landscapes
  • Work under the guidance of a development manager while contributing independently to project goals.

MINIMUM QUALIFACTIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Civil, Aeronautical Engineering, Applied Mechanics, or a closely related field with 2 years of experience in developing material constitutive models, or MS.
  • Strong foundation in computational mechanics and nonlinear finite element analysis.
  • Proficient in Fortran and/or C/C++, Python, and modern software development tools.
  • Demonstrated ability to write robust, efficient, and maintainable code.
  • Familiarity with cloud environments and commercial simulation software practices.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ph.D. in Mechanical, Civil, Aeronautical Engineering, Applied Mechanics, or a closely related field with a focus on material constitutive modeling or solid mechanics.
  • Deep expertise in material constitutive model theory and implementation in areas such as:
    • Plasticity including multisurface and pressure-dependent yield surfaces
    • Creep, visco-elasticity, and viscoplasticity
    • Damage and failure modeling
    • Finite strain material modeling
  • Solid knowledge of finite element theory, element formulation, and nonlinear solver strategies.
  • Understanding of numerical methods, solution stability, and algorithm development.
  • Experience developing within a large-scale commercial software environment.
  • Proven track record of successfully leading or contributing to technical projects, from design to delivery.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively in a distributed global team.
  • Curiosity, initiative, and passion for solving complex engineering challenges.
