AnaVation seeks an experienced Data Architect SME to deploy and maintain Data Mesh architecture in federal government environments using Agile/SAFe. Responsibilities include planning and designing data solutions, developing scalable cloud-based data infrastructure (AWS: S3, Redshift, Glue, Lake Formation, Lambda), designing ETL pipelines, collaborating with data domain teams, establishing data governance practices, leading Data Mesh implementation and support, providing guidance on cultural adoption of data mesh principles, and communicating with stakeholders. The role requires expertise in AWS, Data Mesh, Agile, and a Secret clearance. Occasional travel to Clarksburg, WV, may be required.
Must have:
- 8+ years designing & implementing data architectures (data lakes, warehouses, Data Mesh)
- 5+ years with cloud-based data platforms (AWS)
- 2+ years leading data engineering teams
- AWS expertise (S3, Redshift, Glue, Lake Formation, Lambda)
- Data Mesh & decentralized data architecture understanding
- Agile (Scrum, Kanban, Jira, Confluence, SAFe) experience
- Secret clearance

Description of Task to be Performed:
Come join our growing team and make a difference every day! AnaVation is seeking an experienced Data Architect SME to join an exciting work program. The successful candidate will have experience deploying and maintaining the Data Mesh architecture, ensuring the efficient management, accessibility, and interoperability of enterprise data across systems, preferably in federal government environments following Agile processes using the SAFe framework.
Key responsibilities include:
· Participates in planning, definition, and high-level design of data solutions, exploring alternatives and evaluating new technologies.
· Develops and maintains scalable cloud-based data infrastructure, ensuring alignment with the organization's decentralized data management strategy.
· Designs and implements ETL pipelines using AWS services (e.g., S3, Redshift, Glue, Lake Formation, Lambda) to support data domain requirements and self-service analytics.
· Collaborates with data domain teams to design and deploy domain-specific data products, adhering to organizational standards for schema design, data transformations, and storage solutions.
· Establishes and enforces data governance practices, including compliance with data privacy, access controls, and lineage requirements, across the organization’s data assets. Maintains a comprehensive data catalog and governance tools, automating workflows to uphold data integrity and ensure discoverability across all domains.
· Leads the implementation and ongoing support of data mesh architecture, ensuring seamless integration and data flow across multiple domains.
· Ensures the availability and reliability of the organization’s Data Mesh software, managing operations and maintenance of the framework.
· Provides guidance and leadership on the cultural adoption of data mesh principles, including organizational training initiatives for data stewards and users.
· Communicates effectively with stakeholders to align technical data architecture with business goals, ensuring long-term support for analytics, insights, and innovation.
This position is mostly remote but may potentially require occasional trips to our customer location in Clarksburg, WV.
Remote status is expected to continue but is subject to change according to the direction of the customer.
Required Qualifications:
- Education: A bachelor’s or master’s degree in computer science, Information Systems, Data Engineering, or a related technical field, preferred. In lieu of degree, minimum of fourteen (14) years relevant experience required.
- Experience: 8 years
- Required Skills/Certs:
- Eight (8) years of experience designing and implementing data architectures, including large-scale data environments such as data lakes, data warehouses, and data mesh frameworks.
- Five (5) years of experience working with cloud-based data platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, Google Cloud), particularly for data storage, processing, and analytics.
- Demonstrated two (2) years of experience leading and mentoring data engineering teams, fostering collaboration, and ensuring successful project execution.
- Expertise in cloud-native data engineering within AWS environments (S3, Redshift, Glue, Lake Formation, Lambda).
- Solid understanding of Data Mesh concepts and decentralized data architecture.
- Experience working in an Agile organization using Scrum, Kanban, Jira, Confluence, and SAFe.
- Required Clearance:
- This position requires an active Secret clearance.
