As a Data Scientist at Ookla, you will develop methodologies using Ookla's datasets to describe internet performance. You will work with data engineers and product managers to create data products, detect anomalies, and ensure data integrity. Responsibilities include leading the development of new measurements, statistical testing, collaborating with various teams, and mentoring team members. The role requires strong communication and problem-solving skills, and a drive for data advocacy. The work environment is flexible, encouraging individuality, fun, and talent.
Must have:
  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field or equivalent experience
  • Strong foundation in statistical inference and modeling techniques
  • Experience applying statistical methods to real-world challenges
  • Expertise in programming languages like Python or R
  • SQL expertise and experience building complex queries
  • Strong understanding of data pipeline and ETL processes
  • Experience with cloud computing platforms
  • Excellent communication skills for technical and non-technical audiences
  • Proven history of project ownership and cross-team collaboration
  • Dependable team player that enjoys learning and teaching
Good to have:
  • Experience with internet, cellular, and broadband technology and infrastructure

Role Summary

We’re looking for a junior- to mid-level data scientist to join our unique and highly-collaborative team of analysts and data scientists. Your primary focus will be developing methodologies using Ookla's rich, multi-dimensional data sets, that describe mobile and fixed internet performance in new and meaningful ways to enable consumers, service providers, manufacturers, regulators, and more to understand their service and make informed decisions.
For this role, a strong understanding of networking technologies, inferential statistics, and data programming are needed. Successful applicants will have an inquisitive nature, a creative approach to solving problems, excellent communication skills, and a strong drive for data advocacy.

Expectations for Success

  • Lead development of new measurements, KPIs, and models for describing internet quality of service and quality of experience. 
  • Develop approaches for statistical testing of measurements and KPIs.
  • Work closely with data engineers and product managers to turn methodology into viable data products. 
  • Develop methodologies for detecting anomalies and ensuring the quality and integrity of Ookla’s data.
  • Support and collaborate with brand licensing, sales, technical presales, and industry analysts.
  • Protect Ookla’s credibility by ensuring quality and consistency across Ookla’s products and public-facing outputs.
  • Create internal tools, packages, documentation, and processes that enable reproducible reporting and self-service. 
  • Stay curious and up-to-date with the latest advancements in data science and tooling.
  • Actively mentor and support team members.

  • Strong foundation in statistical inference, hypothesis testing, data analysis, and statistical modeling techniques. 
  • Experience applying statistical methods to real-world challenges.
  • Expertise in programming languages like Python or R.
  • SQL expertise, and experience building complex queries against large data sets.
  • Strong understanding of data pipeline and ETL processes.
  • Experience with cloud computing platforms like AWS, Azure, or GCP.
  • Excellent communication skills to convey complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Proven history of project ownership and cross-team collaboration. 
  • Dependable team player that enjoys learning from and teaching others.
  • Experience with internet, cellular, and broadband technology and infrastructure.
  • Background check required.
