Job Description

The Director, Labor Law will provide strategic advice and legal counsel regarding collective bargaining, evolving labor law, and labor engagement. Responsibilities include leading collective bargaining agreement negotiations, advising on labor strategy, managing relationships with outside counsel, providing legal advice on labor relations training, and partnering with various internal teams to develop long-term strategies for improving labor and employee relations. This role also involves working closely with Microsoft's labor team and responding to business and legal team requests. The candidate needs to ensure clarity and inclusiveness in all communications. Travel for labor negotiations and team events may be required.
Must have:
  • Juris Doctor degree and 7+ years of labor law experience.
  • Active law license and ability to meet admission requirements.
  • Experience drafting and interpreting collective bargaining agreements.
  • Strong judgment, incorporating legal analysis and business goals.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills for stakeholders.
  • Ability to handle multiple projects and meet deadlines.

Headquartered just north of Washington, D.C., with offices around the world, ZeniMax Media is a video game publisher, managed by an experienced group of executives, which has assembled a strong creative team of world-class game developers, graphic artists and designers, sound engineers, producers and programmers to create and sell premium video game titles to a growing worldwide market.

We’re seeking a Director, Labor Law, to join ZeniMax! Working closely with the Microsoft Legal team and reporting to the Senior Corporate Counsel for Microsoft, you’ll provide strategic advice and legal counsel regarding collective bargaining, evolving labor law, and labor engagement.

Responsibilities

ZeniMax is looking for an experienced and motivated labor lawyer to join our in-house legal team as a close, trusted business partner, providing advice on a variety of legal issues, including but not limited to:

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead negotiation of collective bargaining agreements, including developing negotiation strategies and preparing proposals for negotiations, as well as supporting all litigation, arbitration, and/or legal proceedings related to grievances, unfair labor practice charges, or other issues related to the NLRA and organized activity.
  • Advise leadership and internal business partners on labor strategy, evolving labor law, collective bargaining agreements, highlighting risk and recommending proactive, solution-oriented strategies with measurable outcomes (e.g., reducing grievances by X%).
  • Manage relationships with outside counsel, ensuring their work aligns with company objectives and is cost-effective.
  • Provide legal advice on labor relations training, education, and communication. Advocate for strategies that foster an inclusive, collaborative, and supportive work environment.
  • Partner closely with Human Resources, Labor Relations, Employee Relations, Communications, and other internal business partners to develop long-term strategies for improving labor and employee relations and increasing employee engagement, with specific goals (e.g., boosting engagement scores by X%).
  • Work closely with Microsoft’s labor team as an extended member of Microsoft’s Workforce, Employment and Benefits Solutions (WEBS) legal team, including attending team meetings and dotted line reporting to Microsoft’s lead labor attorney.
  • Respond promptly to a wide range of requests from across the business and legal teams, ensuring clarity and inclusiveness in all communications.
  • As needed, travel for labor negotiations, team events, and other events.

Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor Degree or international equivalent degree and 7+ years’ experience as a practicing attorney specializing in labor law, including collective bargaining, organizing activity, agency hearings, and labor arbitration OR equivalent experience.
  • Active license to practice law in a jurisdiction and capability to meet admission requirements in a relevant jurisdiction.
  • Ability and willingness to travel up to 25%.
  • Extensive experience and knowledge in drafting, negotiating, and interpreting collective bargaining agreements. Experience in the entertainment industry is preferred.
  • Sound judgment that incorporates legal analysis, a pragmatic approach, and consideration of business goals, risk tolerance, and external stakeholder priorities.
  • Project management skills and the ability to work efficiently and meet deadlines in the face of competing priorities.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to foster inclusive dialogue and align diverse stakeholders.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Ability to independently handle multiple, diverse projects simultaneously and under deadlines.
  • Strong ethics, collaboration, and influencing skills.
  • Ability to thrive in a dynamic industry where there is ambiguity and flexibility in the business and legal environment.

Salary Range

Director, Labor Law - The typical base pay range for this position at the start of employment is expected to be between $190,000 - $275,000 per year.

           

ZeniMax has different base pay ranges for different work locations within the United States, which allows us to pay employees competitively and consistently in different geographic markets. The range above reflects the potential base pay across the U.S. for this role; the applicable base pay range will depend on what ultimately is determined to be the candidate’s primary work location. Individual base pay depends on various factors, in addition to primary work location, such as complexity and responsibility of role, job duties/requirements, and relevant experience and skills. Base pay ranges are reviewed and typically updated each year. Offers are made within the base pay range applicable at the time.
