Job Description

The Senior Controls Engineer will be responsible for identifying customer goals, analyzing plant design documents, and implementing projects to meet requirements. This includes designing, constructing, and integrating Power Plant Control (PPC) implementations along with Data Acquisition Systems (DAS) & SCADA for Commercial and Industrial and Utility renewable generation systems. The engineer will also manage and own development efforts around Stem’s PowerManager and PowerTrack SaaS platforms, conduct and document testing (Bench Testing, FAT, and SAT), develop and support new processes, and provide technical advice. They will also assist customers and support teams in solving technical issues and support plant commissioning activities. This role requires strong collaboration and problem-solving skills.
Must have:
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or 8+ years of relevant experience.
  • 5+ years of controls engineering experience in relevant industries.
  • Experience utilizing PLCs for DAS and closed-loop control integration.
  • Experience designing, tuning, and troubleshooting PI and PID loops.
  • Experience with Industrial SCADA/EMS platforms.
  • Experience with SQL databases.
  • Knowledge of Modbus, DNP3, OPC, IEC-60870, and FTP communication protocols.
  • Competency in Python, C#, Visual Basic, IEC-61131 programming languages.
  • Experience integrating layer 2/3 networking hardware and topologies.
  • Solid understanding of Power Plant Control modes and grid stability.
  • Experience with systematic design and troubleshooting of control systems.
  • Ability to communicate technical information clearly to non-SMEs.
Good to have:
  • Knowledge of SEL or Phoenix platforms.
  • Familiarity with VMware and/or Hyper-V virtualization.
  • Knowledge of cybersecurity best-practices and requirements (NERC-CIP).

Responsibilities: 

  • Identifies customer goals, analyzes plant design documents, and implements projects to requirements.  

  • Design, construct, and integrate Power Plant Control (PPC) implementations along with Data Acquisition Systems (DAS) & SCADA for C&I (Commercial and Industrial) and Utility renewable generation systems. 

  • Manages and owns development efforts around STEM’s PowerManager and PowerTrack SaaS platforms. 

  • Conducts and documents testing including Bench Testing, FAT, and SAT. 

  • Develops, integrates, and supports new processes, products, and standardizations. 

  • Provides appropriate and timely technical advice on matters relating to PPC, DAS, SCADA. 

  • Assist customers, Stem’s Support Team, Field Service Teams in solving technical issues. 

  • Supports plant commissioning activities with occasional travel to critical sites as needed. Independently manages project pipelines and stakeholder expectations. 

  • Other duties as assigned. 

 

Required Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering with a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience or 8+ years of revenant experience in lieu of a degree. 

  • 5+ years of experience with the following: 

  • Controls engineering experience in one of the following industries: renewable power generation, fossil power generation, power distribution, or battery storage. 

  • Utilizing PLCs for DAS and closed-loop control integration. 

  • Designing, tuning, and troubleshooting PI and PID loops. 

  • Industrial SCADA/EMS platforms including Inductive Automation’s Ignition Platform. 

  • Experience with SQL databases. 

  • Knowledge of the following communication protocols: Modbus, DNP3, OPC, IEC-60870, FTP. 

  • Competency in the following programming languages: Python, C#, Visual Basic, IEC-61131  

  • Experience integrating layer 2/3 networking hardware and topologies and serial communications. 

  • Solid understanding Power Plant Control modes and electrical grid stability conditions and variables. 

  • Experience with systematic design, tuning, and troubleshooting of complex control systems. 

  • Ability to communicate technical information clearly and concisely to non-SMEs. 

  • In this customer-facing role you must be collaborative with strong listening and problem-solving skills.   

 

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Knowledge of SEL or Phoenix platforms is a plus. 

  • Familiarity with VMware and/or Hyper-V virtualization is a plus. 

  • Knowledge of cybersecurity best-practices and requirements (NERC-CIP) is a plus.
