Job Description

The Technical Designer will solve technical problems from a designer's point of view, act as a liaison between design and engineering, optimize designer workflows, script content, and mentor fellow Technical Designers. This role involves designing and implementing scripted content, setting standards, communicating progress, and prototyping new solutions. The environment encourages showing work in progress and embraces a "No Blame Culture." The role offers the chance to work on an ambitious open-world game.
Must have:
  • 3+ years of game design and scripting experience
  • Strong problem-solving and scripting abilities
  • Understanding of gameplay systems and game design principles
  • Ability to write scripts and create scripted systems
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
Good to have:
  • Technical Degree (CS, IT, SE, CE, or equivalent)
  • Knowledge of multiple programming languages (C/C++/C#/Java)
  • Ability to read and comprehend code (C/C++ etc.)
  • Experience with Visual Scripting languages
  • Deep understanding of how open world systems affect gameplay

About the Hiring Team

Welcome to Lightspeed LA, the first U.S.-based, AAA game development studio for Tencent Games. Lightspeed LA is focused on building open-world games that emphasize an ambitious living world, sophisticated player-driven gameplay, and mature, thoughtful storytelling. What the Role Entails

  • Solve technical problems from a designer’s point of view and be able to predict the efficacy of solutions
  • Be the liaison between design and engineering teams
  • Work with multi-disciplinary teams to optimize designer workflow, processes and content pipeline
  • Assume responsibility for scripting intricate content and systems
  • Design and implement scripted content as required by design and engineering
  • Set the bar for the design department’s implementation of scripted content
  • Mentor fellow Technical Designers
  • Communicate with design, production and engineering on team progress and problems as they arise
  • Solve technical/feature issues in innovative ways
  • Clearly communicate your work to others
  • Prototype new workflows, systems, and solutions
  • Explore new software and techniques, including novel solutions
  • Champion for the player and developers, fight for quality

Who We Look For

  • 3+ years of proven game design and scripting experience in a professional environment
  • A strong desire for solving complex technical and creative problems
  • A good understanding of object-oriented programming patterns
  • Extensive understanding of gameplay systems, game design principles, and industry standards
  • Ability to write scripts and create scripted systems and asset pipelines from scratch
  • Degree or equivalent work experience in UX Design/Game Design/Computer Science/or another related field
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
  • 3+ years of experience in game development
  • 1+ years of Unreal experience
  • Ability to produce AAA quality game content
  • At least one shipped AAA title

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Technical Degree (CS, IT, SE, CE, or equivalent work experience) is a plus
  • Multiple programming languages: one of C/C++/C#/Java to a reasonable knowledge
  • Ability to read and comprehend code (C/C++ etc.), enough to discuss implementations with Engineers and debug broken functionality
  • Ability to drive problem solving by predicting problems, producing test cases, and implementing fixes in systems and tools
  • Strong experience with Visual Scripting languages (Kismet, Blueprint, etc.)
  • A deep understanding of how open world systems affect gameplay
  • At least one shipped AAA title in Unreal Engine

The base pay range for this position in the state(s) above is $62,640.0 to $126,360.0 per year. Actual pay is based on market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. A sign on payment, relocation package, and restricted stock units may be provided as part of the compensation package, as well as other medical, financial, and/or other benefits, dependent on the specific position offered.
