Job Description
The Freelance Producer for Dance will be responsible for organizing and promoting dance shows to build a strong community in New York City. The role involves curating and booking high-quality, diverse dancers and venues, ensuring exceptional show quality, developing and executing marketing strategies, promoting and selling tickets, creating promotional content, and building relationships with local organizations. This is a 4-month fixed-term contract with commission-based pay, requiring a flexible schedule including evenings and weekends.
Must have:
- 1-3 years of live event experience.
- Deep network within the dance community.
- Passion for the arts and community building.
- Strong knowledge of New York City and its neighborhoods.
- Ability to connect with diverse organizations.
- Exceptional time management and communication skills.

Sofar Sounds is a global community that connects artists and audiences through unique and intimate experiences. Sofar shows transform everyday spaces — from living rooms and rooftops, to boutiques and museums — into captivating venues for intimate gigs, creating inclusive experiences that bring people closer together. Founded in London in 2009, Sofar creates space where music and arts matter in 400 cities around the world.
The Role
Until this point, Sofar’s experiences have mostly been centred around live music. We are now looking (and excited!) to expand our shows into other creative arts, including dance. We’ve had recent success with our pilot and are now looking for a Freelance Producer to own and grow Dance into a thriving Sofar event vertical in New York City.
As a Freelance Producer, you’ll organize and promote shows to build a strong and vibrant Sofar community in your city around Dance. You’ll be a true Sofar ambassador – partnering closely with the central Concerts and local city operations and marketing teams to produce exceptional shows, conceptualise and execute local marketing initiatives, and expand Sofar’s footprint in the dance community.
Our Producers have strong business sense, maintain a keen awareness of cultural trends, and have communities that they can easily tap in to organize amazing live events (including performers, locations, sponsors, etc.). They’re entrepreneurial, resourceful, and driven; whether it’s figuring out how to creatively sell tickets or dealing with a live event curveball, they know how to get things done and thrive on the challenge. What you'll do:
- Own and grow our new Dance format vertical, building off the success of our pilot
- Lead curation and booking for shows in your city with the highest-quality, diverse set of dancers and venues, continuing to grow our networks as needed
- Own the quality of your shows (including attending shows), working closely with the central Concerts team and local staff to ensure magical experiences that are rooted in hospitality
- Create a vision and collaborate with the central Concerts team to build and execute your strategy to grow this Sofar offering - number of monthly shows, neighborhoods, show theme ideas, etc.
- Promote and sell tickets in your city with self-directed local marketing tactics.
- Create content to help promote your shows, either coordinating with external photographers and videographers or producing your own content
- Identify and build relationships with local organizations with like-minded audiences to build community, broaden our reach, and co-promote shows
Who you are:
- You have 1-3 years of experience in live event curation, promotions, social media marketing, sales, and/or partnerships.
- You have a deep network within the dance community, including emerging and established dancers. You have a sharp eye for discovering talent.
- You are passionate about the arts, and eager to capitalize on everything that a Sofar show offers – including building local connections and giving opportunities to dancers around New York City
- You have a strong pulse on your city, the unique nature of each neighborhood, and where people like to spend their free time
- You know how to connect with diverse community-driven organizations, media partners, or local businesses that would add strategic value to growing our dance presence in New York City
- You’re actively engaged in your local cultural scene and build community around it
- You have exceptional time management skills and are a clear written communicator
