The Product System Design Engineer will be responsible for creating engineering solutions that satisfy functional and physical requirements of the Product System environment. This includes meeting system level requirements and providing appropriate requirements for component level design. Key responsibilities include designing and integrating composite components into the Fan Product System, focusing on fan blades, fan cases, and outlet guide vanes. The role involves working with multi-disciplinary teams, generating innovative design concepts, conducting design studies, performing failure mode analysis, and facilitating geometric and functional interfaces. The engineer will also define strategies for product system certification and communicate product system requirements. The role is full-time and involves hybrid working.
Must have:
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or regional equivalent
  • Knowledge of composite materials and manufacturing methods
  • Knowledge of gas turbine functionality, AS9145/APQP
  • Good communication and presentation skills
  • CAD experience, preferably NX and Teamcenter
  • 3+ years of composite component design experience.
Good to have:
  • Knowledge of analysis methods (stress, impact, aerodynamics)
  • Knowledge of model-based systems engineering

What you will be doing
 

We have exciting opportunities for Product System Design Engineers to join the Global Mechanical Systems Capability function team in Derby or Bristol.

The Product System Design Engineer will create engineering solutions that satisfy functional and physical requirements of the Product System environment in order to meet system level requirements and provide appropriate requirements to allow component level design. Preliminary component design is also a key requirement for the role along with integration of the design into the system level architecture.

The main focus of the role is the design and integration of composite components into the Fan Product System and the subsequent integration of the product system architecture at system level.

What you'll be doing:

As a Product System Design Engineer, you will support the Engine Project and the Product Design Function through:

  • Design of composite fan system architecture and components, mainly fan blades, fan cases and outlet guide vanes, to APQP preliminary design review level and integration support to critical design review
  • Working with multi-disciplinary teams to deliver a world-class compression system design
  • Generating innovative product system design concepts, using systems engineering techniques, to meet challenging customer requirements
  • Conducting design studies to optimise technical attributes, e.g. cost, weight, performance, ensuring alignment with project, R&T and component engineering strategy
  • Performing product system design failure mode analysis
  • Facilitating agreement of complex geometric and functional interfaces between stakeholders
  • Working with Validation Engineering to define strategies for product system certification and / or standardisation of modifications
  • Eliciting, validating and communication of product system requirements to appropriate stakeholders

For the role of Product System Design Engineer, we are looking for someone who is/has:

  • Bachelor's or higher degree in Engineering or regional equivalent qualification, ideally in mechanical engineering, or equivalent experience
  • Good knowledge of low temperature composite materials and associated design tools and manufacturing methods
  • Good knowledge of gas turbine functionality particularly compression systems, AS9145/APQP or an equivalent change management process, failure mode analysis, safety processes such as hazard identification, classification and closure management
  • Good knowledge of materials, manufacturing and assembly techniques
  • Good communication, inter-personal and presentation skills
  • CAD experience, preferably NX and Teamcenter
  • Knowledge of analysis methods is desirable, e.g. mechanical stress, impact, aerodynamics or aero-mechanics
  • Knowledge of model based systems engineering is desirable
  • Proven track record of delivery and at least 3 years of composite component design experience within the aerospace industry or equivalent
