The Principal System Engineer will lead the design, development, and deployment of Wabtec's Trip Optimizer Energy Management product. This involves optimizing fuel consumption for locomotives based on train makeup and route. Responsibilities include driving future concepts, translating customer requirements, leading technical reviews, and ensuring timely project completion. The position involves technical leadership across global teams and participation in project proposals.
Must have:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Mathematics, or Computer Science.
  • 10 years experience in Engineering Systems, Hardware/Software Engineering, or Data Systems.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work in a cross-functional, global environment.
  • Willingness to travel domestically and internationally.
Good to have:
  • Prior system design experience with on-board distributed systems architecture.
  • Knowledge of AAR and CENELEC standards for the rail industry.

How will you make a difference?

The Principal System Engineer will be responsible for leading the design, development and deployment of Wabtec’s Trip Optimizer™ Energy Management product. Wabtec’s Trip Optimizer™ System is an intelligent, fuel-saving cruise control for locomotives that optimizes fuel consumption based on a specific train’s make up and route traveled. Additionally, the successful candidate will work closely with Product Management and railroad customers to develop world class solutions that bring advanced automation to the rail industry.
 

What do we want to know about you?

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Mathematics or Computer Science from an accredited college or university.
  • Minimum of 10 years hands-on design, requirements development and implementation experience involving; Engineering Systems, Hardware / Software Engineering, and/or Data Information Systems.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Proven ability to work in a cross-functional, global environment.
  • Willingness and ability to travel domestically and internationally.

What will your typical day look like?

  • Drive future concepts and design enhancements for the Trip Optimizer™ product using sound engineering principles and adhering to business standards, practices, procedures, and product / program requirements.
  • Translate customer needs / requirements, resolve specification issues, handle technical correspondence, provide periodic updates, ensure customer satisfaction, and negotiate / coordinate with cross-functional teams as appropriate.
  • Be a Technical Leader for the projects across global cross-functional teams (Product / Program Management, SW COE, Electrical Integration, Train Control, Office Systems, Safety, Validation and Applications Engineering) assuring “cradle to grave” success.
  • Participate in the development of proposals for projects.
  • Work with Wabtec’s scientific community and railroad subject matter experts to develop freight automation solutions, evaluate them in field trials and produce the solutions to function in a railroad revenue environment.
  • Lead and participate in technical and program reviews.
  • Maintain broad awareness of technical trends to ensure technical quality excellence, timely completion of work, and reviews and responsiveness to customer/program needs.
  • Desired experience with prior system design experience with on-board distributed systems architecture
  • Knowledge of AAR and CENELEC standards for the rail industry.

Our job titles may span more than one career level. The salary range for this role is between

$102,500.00-$146,000.00

The actual salary offered to a candidate may be influenced by a variety of factors, such as: training, transferable skills, work experience, education, business needs, market demands and work location. The base pay range is subject to change and may be modified in the future. More information on offered benefits, which include health, welfare, and retirement, are available at mywabtecbenefits.com. Other benefit offerings for this role may include an annual bonus, if eligible.
