Job Summary

Job Description

Microsoft is seeking Software Engineers for Systems roles in Redmond, WA, and other remote locations. Responsibilities include developing systems software, frameworks, and platform-level code for Windows, Azure Linux, and Azure infrastructure. You'll collaborate with stakeholders to define user requirements, implement maintainable code, and ensure quality through rigorous testing. This role requires expertise in various programming languages (C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, Python), problem-solving skills for multiprocessor systems, and experience with debugging tools. You'll contribute to architectural design, apply best practices for scalability and security, and work within a team to meet performance expectations.
Must have:
  • Bachelor's degree in CS or related field
  • Proven coding experience (C, C++, etc.)
  • System software development experience
  • Problem-solving & debugging skills
  • Collaboration and communication skills
Good to have:
  • Master's degree in Computer Engineering/Science
  • Experience with Rust, Go, OS device drivers
  • Experience with host networking

 As a Software Engineer in Operating Systems, you will develop systems software, frameworks, and platform level code used in support of hardware. You will contribute to Operating Systems like Windows and Azure Linux and participate in design and development to power Azure infrastructure in the cloud, Edge, technology platforms for commercial, and/or end-user applications.

 

This opportunity will allow you to create and implement extensible and maintainable code for a product, service, or feature. You will partner with stakeholders to determine user requirements for a feature and consider a variety of feedback channels to incorporate insights into future designs or solution fixes. You will collaborate with others to create a clear and articulated plan for testing, assuring quality of solutions, while applying knowledge of debugging tools, logs, telemetry, and other methods to proactively flag issues. This opportunity will allow you to learn about customer scaling requirements and the application of best practices for meeting scaling needs and performance expectations, while ensuring the correct processes are followed to achieve a high degree of security, privacy, safety, and accessibility.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree (or currently pursuing a degree) in Computer Science or related technical discipline with proven experience coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python,
    • OR equivalent experience.

Preferred Qualifications

 

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or related technical field with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, Rust, Go, OS device drivers, and embedded systems AND 1+ years of experience,
  • OR Master's Degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or related technical field with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, Rust, Go, OS device drivers and embedded systems,
  • OR equivalent experience.
  • Demonstrated experience and/or interest in systems-related areas, such as operating systems, computer architecture, networking, driver/firmware development, and low-level programming languages like C.
  • Demonstrated experience with problem solving and debugging skills for modern-day multiprocessor systems. 
  • Understanding of how to write/debug code and use software/hardware level code debuggers and diagnostic tools. 
  • Experience with host networking.

 

Software Engineering IC2 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $81,900 - $160,200 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $105,600 - $174,600 per year.

Responsibilities

  • Applies software engineering principles to solve complex problems on product Hardware and Operating systems.
  • Learns and contributes to processes for the architecture of a product/solution feature and learns to create proposals by testing design hypotheses and helping to refine code plans under the technical leadership of others. 
  • Seeks feedback and applies internal or industry best practices to improve technical solutions. 
  • Contributes to partnership with appropriate stakeholders (e.g., project manager, technical lead) to determine user requirements for a feature.  
  • Develops knowledge of and learns to apply best practices to reliably build code that is based on well-established methods. Develops an understanding of global and local regulations for technologies and system applications. 
  • Problem solves and debug modern-day multiprocessor systems.  
  • Demonstrates an understanding of how to write/debug code.
