Job Description

The Tech Artist will be responsible for creating visual effects in Unity, ranging from stylized frame-by-frame 2D to hyper-realistic 3D, following the Art Director’s concept. This role involves using tools like Photoshop, 3D tools (3DS or Maya), and Unity tools to integrate art, build UIs, create shaders, and assemble in-engine scenes. The artist will work closely with the Art Director to meet quality standards, create documentation, and communicate between artists and engineers. They must also deliver high-quality work on time and collaborate within a Scrum environment, helping the team about technical constraints. The job requires creating documentation regarding pipeline processes and desired asset specs, delivering high quality work on-time, working with a team in a collaborative Scrum environment, and helping inform the team about technical constraints.
Good To Have:
  • Scripting experience with CG/HLSL, C#.
  • Understanding of hardware rendering pipelines.
  • Strong portfolio.
  • Demo reel showing off real-time FX chops.
Must Have:
  • 3+ years of experience in game development.
  • Ability to use art tools to create UIs, environments, and VFX.
  • Ability to create beautiful frame-by-frame 2D VFX.
  • Ability to create VFX using Unity Particle System.
  • Ability to create documentation for pipeline processes and asset specs.
  • Solid understanding of animation basics: timing, eases, anticipation, arcs.
  • Solid understanding of shaders.
  • A critical eye for game rendering and experience with in-engine lighting.
  • Fast learner who can pick up tools and plugins quickly.
  • Ability to work with Unity components.
  • Experience in working within technical constraints of game engines.
  • Understanding of platform features and limitations for mobile devices.
  • Passion for gaming.
  • A desire to grow your skills.

Responsibilities:

  • Create Visual FX in Unity that range from stylized frame-by-frame 2D to hyper realistic 3D, following Art Director’s concept.
  • Use Photoshop and 3D tools (3DS or Maya) to create and edit textures and models.
  • Integrate art into Unity, using Unity Tools (e.g. animation editor), plugins (e.g. NGUI, Play Maker), shaders, and script components to implement the artistic vision of the game.
  • Build animated UIs in Unity from concepts and wireframes.
  • Create optimized shaders and materials following the Art Director’s concept.
  • Using implemented assets, assemble in-engine scenes and prefabs for versatile reuse.
  • Use a critical artistic eye to polish level layouts (asset placement, lighting, post-processing).
  • Work closely with the Art Director to ensure the quality bar is met.
  • Create documentation regarding pipeline processes and desired asset specs.
  • Be a communication bridge between artists and engineers.
  • Deliver high quality work on-time.
  • Work with a team in a collaborative Scrum environment.
  • Help inform the team about technical constraints, such as polycount limitations and maximum texture sizes.
  • Work with engineers to develop new Unity components as a game’s art pipeline demands.

Requirements:

  • 3+ years experience working on shipped game titles.
  • Ability to use art tools–both internal and external to Unity–to create beautiful UIs, environments, and visual FX.
  • The ability to create beautiful frame-by-frame 2D VFX.
  • The ability to create beautiful VFX through Unity Particle System.
  • The ability to create thorough, organized, and clear documentation for pipeline processes, asset specs, and tools.
  • Possess a solid understanding of animation basics: timing, eases, anticipation, arcs, etc.
  • Possess a solid understanding of shaders (not necessarily writing shaders, but knowing how to find and use them to achieve a desired effect).
  • A critical eye for game rendering and experience with in-engine lighting and post-processing methods.
  • Fast learner who can pick up tools and plugins quickly and research 3rd-party solutions as needed.
  • Ability to work with components in Unity (not necessarily to write scripts, but to work with existing component libraries).
  • Ability and experience in working within technical constraints of game engines and editors.
  • Understanding of platform features and limitations for mobile devices.
  • Passion for gaming.
  • A desire to grow your skills and experience.
  • Must be available to work full-time at our office in Los Angeles, CA.
  • Candidates without a portfolio WILL NOT be considered. Please include samples (or links to samples) of your work.

Pluses:

  • Scripting experience with CG/HLSL, C#.
  • Understanding of hardware rendering pipelines.
  • Strong portfolio demonstrating an ability to work with a broad range of subjects and styles from realistically detailed to stylized.
  • Demo reel that shows off your real-time FX chops (++ if done in Unity).
