  • Ability to collaborate with cross-disciplinary teams.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to debug complex systems.
  • Solid understanding of the asset pipeline.
Good to have:
  • Familiarity with procedural generation techniques in Unreal.
  • Experience with scripting languages (e.g., Python, C++, Blueprints).
  • A passion for creating dynamic, reactive worlds.

Job Details

Yellow Brick Games is seeking a talented Technical Artist with a specialization in destruction and interactivity to join our team. In this role, you will focus on developing systems and techniques that enable realistic and engaging destructible environments, interactive objects, and dynamic gameplay experiences. You will work closely with the art, design and programming teams to bring the game world to life through cutting-edge destruction effects and interactive elements.

Yellow Brick Games is based in Quebec City, Canada, and we are open to discuss remote-work situations. We are committed to diversity and all qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to place of origin, age, status, religious beliefs, personal orientations, or physical condition.

Responsibilities

  • Destruction Systems Development: Design, implement, and optimize advanced destruction systems for in-game environments, ensuring they meet both visual quality and performance requirements.
  • Procedural Asset Creation: Develop and maintain procedural tools and techniques for creating destructible assets, ensuring they integrate seamlessly into the game world and function interactively during gameplay.
  • Collaboration across disciplines : Collaborate with artists, level designers and programming teams to integrate destructible environments and interactive objects into the game’s levels and gameplay systems.
  • Interactivity Systems: Work closely with the design team to develop interactive elements within the game world, including objects that respond to player actions, environmental interactions, and dynamic events.
  • Optimization: Profile and optimize destruction and interactivity systems to ensure smooth performance across all target platforms while maintaining high-quality visuals.
  • Problem Solving & Troubleshooting: Address and resolve any technical issues related to destruction and interactivity, working with the art and programming teams to ensure systems are functioning as intended.
  • Technical Documentation: Create clear documentation for destruction and interactivity workflows, best practices, and tools to ensure scalability and reusability of systems across multiple projects.

Requirements

  • Proven experience as a Technical Artist with a focus on destruction and interactivity in video game development.
  • Strong understanding of destruction simulation techniques (e.g., physics-based destruction, rigid-body dynamics, fracture systems) and real-time rendering.
  • Experience with real-time physics-based destruction solutions like Chaos Physics (Unreal Engine), Havok Physics or similar.
  • Familiarity with the Unreal Engine, with experience working on destructible environments and interactive game systems.
  • Proficiency in relevant tools and software (e.g., Houdini, Maya, Substance Designer, Photoshop) to create destruction assets and interactive components.
  • Knowledge of performance optimization techniques for destruction systems to maintain frame rate and gameplay fluidity.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with cross-disciplinary teams (art, design, programming) to integrate destruction and interactivity features into the game.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to debug complex systems.
  • Solid understanding of the asset pipeline and integration of destructible and interactive assets within the game engine.

Nice to Have

  • Familiarity with procedural generation techniques in Unreal for creating environments and assets.
  • Experience with scripting languages (e.g., Python, C++, Blueprints in Unreal Engine) to automate processes and streamline workflows.
  • A passion for creating dynamic, reactive worlds that respond to player actions and environmental changes.
