Job Description

As a Data Architect at Ookla, you will play a crucial role in evolving the data platform to meet the future needs of real-time big data processing, low latency analytical queries, AI/ML integration, and growing compliance requirements. You will design and implement scalable data models, storages, and pipelines for critical product features, ensuring they meet both end-user and internal stakeholder requirements while adhering to international compliance standards. You will collaborate closely with product managers, data and research scientists, and product engineering teams to understand product requirements and transform them into viable, scalable architectures and implementations within a high-data-volume environment. You'll also create and execute architectural and technological roadmaps, establish data governance frameworks, and mentor junior team members. The role requires strong technical skills, excellent communication, and a self-driven work ethic.
Must have:
  • Strong background in object-oriented and functional programming (Python, Scala, Java, or Go).
  • Strong working knowledge of SQL and databases (MySQL, PostgreSQL, Redshift, Iceberg).
  • Experience with streaming and event-driven architectures (Spark).
  • Strong understanding of data modeling and modern data warehouse architectures.
  • Experience with AWS, Google Cloud Platform, or Azure services.
Good to have:
  • Experience with AI/ML is nice to have

As a data architect, you will play a key role in evolving our data platform to meet the future needs of real-time big data processing, low latency analytical queries, AI/ML integration, and growing compliance requirements. In this role, you will design and implement scalable data models, storages and pipelines for critical product features that meet both our end users' and internal stakeholders' requirements while ensuring international compliance. Expectations for Success You are able to collaborate closely with product managers, data and research scientists and product engineering teams to understand product requirements. You are able to turn product requirements to viable and scalable architectures and implementations in a high data volume environment. You are able to create, communicate and execute architectural and technological roadmaps. You are able to establish and follow data governance frameworks, standards, and best practices to ensure data quality, security, and compliance. You are able to mentor and guide junior team members, helping them understand architectural principles, best practices, and effective ways of working. Education & Background Bachelor's or master’s degree in computer science or related field or equivalent experience Background check is required Technical Skills Strong background in object oriented and functional programming using languages like Python, Scala, Java or Go Strong working knowledge of SQL, databases like MySQL, PostgreSQL, Redshift, Iceberg and query engines like Athena and Trino Experience with streaming and event-driven architectures to process high volume data using tools like Spark Strong understanding of data modeling and modern data warehouse architectures like lakehouse Experience with at least with one of AWS, Google Cloud Platform or Azure services Experience with AI/ML is nice to have Professional attributes Excellent troubleshooting and analysis skills Strong communication skills both in person and via virtual mediums Strong planning and time management skills A self-driven work ethic Excited to learn and work with new technologies in a dynamic environment Benefits We care deeply about each other and the work we do, and our perks are just one way we demonstrate this.
