VGW seeks a Senior Machine Learning Engineer to join their Data Science & Business Intelligence team in Sydney. This role requires deep Computer Vision and ML expertise to build and maintain AI models solving business challenges. Responsibilities include advising stakeholders, defining technical problem statements, leading design sessions, prototyping solutions, ensuring best practices, mentoring junior team members, and collaborating across the organization. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in Computer Vision, Deep Learning, and multimodal ML, proficiency in Python, SQL, and relevant frameworks (TensorFlow, PyTorch, etc.), experience deploying models in cloud environments (Databricks, Snowflake, AWS), and experience with LLMs and VLMs. Preference is given to candidates with OCR and VLM integration experience.

Senior Machine Learning Engineer

We have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Machine Learning Engineer to join our Data Science & Business Intelligence team based in Sydney.

The purpose of the role is to provide deep expertise in Computer Vision and Machine Learning to deliver robust and reliable solutions that solve clearly defined business challenges. Scope, build, and maintain AI models that create significant value for stakeholders, customers, and the broader business.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Act as a trusted advisor to internal stakeholders, providing clarity, guidance, and direction during project ideation and uncertainty.
  • Leverage deep expertise in Computer Vision and ML techniques to clearly define and scope technical problem statements.
  • Facilitate and lead design sessions to explore potential solutions, guiding the team towards the most effective, viable solution considering both technical and operational constraints.
  • Demonstrate advanced proficiency in Computer Vision, Deep Learning, and multimodal ML techniques, applying these effectively within business contexts.
  • Rapidly prototype and iterate solutions, adopting a "fail-fast" approach to learning and development.
  • Ensure adherence to best practices in Computer Vision, ML engineering, and software development, actively improving existing practices or introducing new ones where appropriate.
  • Support team growth by mentoring junior data scientists and ML engineers, providing feedback to their managers, and facilitating internal skill-sharing sessions.
  • Collaborate proactively with colleagues across the organisation, demonstrating strong teamwork and commitment to broader organisational success.

What you will bring to the role:

  • A tertiary qualification in Computer Science, Engineering, Data Science, or a related technical field.
  • Demonstrated experience in developing and deploying AI/ML solutions with a strong emphasis on Computer Vision and Deep Learning.
  • Solid understanding of AI/ML algorithms and methodologies, particularly in image processing, natural language processing, and multimodal model applications.
  • Proficient in Python, SQL, and familiar with essential AI/ML frameworks (e.g., TensorFlow, PyTorch, OpenCV, Hugging Face transformers).
  • Experience in deploying machine learning models in cloud environments such as Databricks, Snowflake, and AWS, including strong capabilities in API integration.
  • Practical experience fine-tuning Large Language Models (LLMs) and multimodal models for specific business use cases.
  • Proven track record of deploying robust Computer Vision systems in production environments using modern cloud technologies.
  • Direct experience working with Optical Character Recognition (OCR) technologies and integrating multimodal Vision-Language Models (VLMs) for tasks such as structured data extraction, process automation, or document intelligence is preferred.
