Job Description
LegalZoom is seeking a Senior Engineering Manager to lead teams developing secure and performant backend services and a stellar UI platform. The role involves advocating for better development practices through CI, automated testing, and improving team operational efficiency. You will grow the technical expertise of your team around craft, quality, scalability, performance, and fault tolerance using state-of-the-art tools. You will also help define and steer a fast-growing new business at LegalZoom, working closely with product managers, designers, and other engineers. Additionally, you will conduct one-on-one meetings with engineers, build relationships, cultivate communication skills, coach them through conflict, and partner to unlock new ideas to accelerate developer productivity and solve customer pain points. Occasional travel may be required.
Must have:
- Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related field
- 2+ years in management role
- 8+ years of engineering experience
- Hands-on experience with Java/Kotlin and Spring Boot
- Experience with UI technologies like React or Remix
- Great communication skills
Good to have:
- Experience as a hands-on Technical Lead
- Experience with OAuth and Identity systems
- Some experience with UI development

Overview
The Engineering team at LegalZoom builds user interfaces, features, applications, and tools for our customers. We’re in an exciting period of growth and seeking talented developers who share our vision for helping fuel the success of small businesses. This is a role for a creative individual who wants to help shape the future direction of our LegalZoom offerings and who has strong engineering chops, opinions on what "good" product and design flows look like, is comfortable with ambiguity, and enjoys collaborating within a team environment.
You’ll help by progressing the LegalZoom experience and you’ll also inspire and elevate the team by producing work that is always raising the bar and taking a customer-obsessed approach to solving problems.
You will
- Lead teams developing secure and performant backend services and a stellar UI platform
- Lead and advocate for better development practices through CI, automated testing, and help improve operational efficiency of the team.
- Grow the technical expertise of your team around craft, quality, scalability, performance, and fault tolerance using state of the art tools
- Help define and steer a fast-growing new business at LegalZoom
- Work closely with product managers, designers, and other engineers to design, build and maintain customer-facing products and interfaces
- Have 1-1s with engineers on your team. Build relationships by getting to know them better, cultivate their communication skills, coach them through a conflict, and partner with them to unlock new ideas to accelerate developer productivity and solve customer pain-points
- Other duties as assigned
- Occasional travel may be required as needed
You have
- Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related field
- 2+ years of experience in a management role, building and motivating a diverse engineering organization fostering autonomy, innovation and learning, while holding a high bar for craft
- 8+ years of experience in engineering, including previous experience as a hands-on Technical Lead
- Hands on experience with Java/Kotlin and Spring Boot and UI technologies like React or Remix, as well as a track record of delivering amazing solutions
- Some experience with OAuth and Identity systems
- Some experience with UI development
- Great communication
- Remote employees should confirm that the internet service available has adequate bandwidth to support all work processes.
LegalZoom is a remote-first company and the national range for this role is ($156,000 - $231,800). Actual compensation offered will depend on several factors including but not limited to: geographic location, work experience, education, skill level, and/or other business and organizational needs. In addition, an annual bonus, incentive bonus and/or restricted stock units may be provided as part of the compensation package.
